Keeping warm is one of the first environmental hazards you’ll learn to handle in Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, long before you get the warm doublet and or the snowquill set. There are several areas around the world that are too cold for you to safely explore. Elixirs can help you manage your body temperature, but they’re temporary and aren’t always strong enough to fully mitigate the cold’s effects. Luckily, there is armor in the game that will help.
Warm doublet
The first piece of cold weather gear you’ll pick up is the warm doublet. It won’t protect you much, but it’ll take the edge off of the cold. There are four ways to get it.
- Read the Old Man’s diary in his hut on the Great Plateau, then cook a meal using a spicy pepper, meat and a Hyrule bass. Show the meal to the Old Man, and he’ll give you the warm doublet.
- If you climb to the top of Mount Hylia on the Great Plateau (before you complete the trials on the Great Plateau), the Old Man will appear and give you the warm doublet as a reward.
- After you complete the Great Plateau, the Old Man will leave a warm doublet in his hut.
- You can buy a warm doublet in Hateno Village for 80 rupees.
Snowquill set
The warm doublet is a good start, but exploring the cold areas of the map — like Mount Lanayru or fighting the Divine Beast Vah Medoh — will require better (and warmer) clothes. And that’s why you want the snowquill set.
You can buy this set — the snowquill tunic, the snowquill trousers and the snowquill headdress — from a shop in Rito Village for 2,150 rupees. It’s not cheap, but buying this set will let you forget about cold climates, period.
Upgrading the snowquill set
You can upgrade the snowquill set at the Great Fairy fountains.
Upgrading the Snowquill Set
Upgrade | Snowquill Headdress | Snowquill Tunic | Snowquill Trousers |
Upgrade | Snowquill Headdress | Snowquill Tunic | Snowquill Trousers |
Level 1 | 3 red chuchu jelly | 3 red chuchu jelly | 3 red chuchu jelly |
Level 2 | 5 red chuchu jelly, 3 warm safflina | 5 red chuchu jelly, 3 warm safflina | 5 red chuchu jelly, 3 warm safflina |
Level 3 | 8 fire keese wing, 5 sunshrooms | 8 fire keese wing, 5 sunshrooms | 8 fire keese wing, 5 sunshrooms |
Level 4 | 10 red lizalfos tail, 5 ruby | 10 red lizalfos tail, 5 ruby | 10 red lizalfos tail, 5 ruby |
At the second level, wearing all three pieces of this set will give you the unfreezable set bonus, which, unsurprisingly, will prevent you from getting frozen.
Both red chuchus and red lizalfos are common on the road leading to Goron City on Death Mountain. Warm safflina can be found in the highlands of the Gerudo Desert (in the northwest area of Gerudo Desert near Kema Kosassa shrine) and Hyrule Ridge.
The other way to get red chuchu jelly is to either kill a regular chuchu with fire damage or cook regular chuchu jelly (or hit it with fire damage).
