With Keeping Up with the Kardashians finale airing, look back on these iconic moments
On October 14, 2007, the world was introduced to an Armenian-American family: the Kardashians.
Now, we bid farewell. After more than a decade of love, drama and plenty of scandals, the final episode of ‘Keeping Up with the Kardashians’ has aired.
Over 14 years, the show catapulted the family to fame of astronomical proportions — with break-off reality series, fashion and beauty lines, modeling careers and more — all under the careful direction of ‘Momager’ Kris Jenner.
It aired in some 90 countries and broadcast in 20 languages, with millions of viewers each week.
Love them, hate them — be completely indifferent about them — it’s impossible to deny the impact this family has on pop culture, the reality scene, fashion and even to some extent, the English language.
There were even a few moments that broke the internet. Here are six:
‘That’ Paper Magazine cover
Kim Kardashian literally ‘broke the internet’ in 2014, with a feature in the Paper Magazine series of the same name.
“If you know nothing else about Kim Kardashian, you know that she is very, very, famous,” the first line of the article reads.
However, it wasn’t so much the piece itself that captured worldwide attention, but the photos.
The cover image showed a near-naked Kim. A second featured a champagne bottle and flute seemingly defying the laws of physics.
By Halloween the following year, the iconic (clothed) image was a popular costume choice.
Was it real? Photoshopped? We may never know the truth.
Khloe’s DUI photo opportunity
In 2007, the reality series was fresh on screens when it was already dealing with one of its first big scandals: Khloe’s DUI.
With their careers on the rise, the incident could have been disastrous. However, one episode tackled the drama head on — painting a picture of Khloe’s grief at losing her dad Rob Kardashian, and suggesting that may have had something to do with her behaviour.
It even aired scenes recreating Khloe’s arrest.
In a huge success for momager Kris, the iconic moment from this era that many remember is not the DUI or the arrest itself, though. It’s the car ride to the jail after Khloe violates her parole… and this line:
One of the great moments in selfies — before selfies were called ‘selfies’ and front-facing camera phones were even a thing. As for Khloe, she would spend a mere three hours locked up.
Kylie Jenner’s secret pregnancy
The youngest of the siblings, Kylie Jenner has literally grown up in front of our eyes.
From a little kid to a make up mogul, almost every aspect of her life has been documented since she was just nine years-old.
So naturally, a surprise baby fits the definition of ‘internet breaking’.
Jenner — and then-partner Travis Scott — managed to keep the entire nine-month pregnancy a secret. No leaks, no posts, no headlines.
Stormi Webster was finally revealed in February 2018, with Jenner’s video ‘To Our Daughter’.
The family did secretly film Jenner’s pregnancy for Keeping Up with the Kardashians, in an episode aptly named ‘The Perfect Stormi’.
Caitlyn Jenner comes out as transgender
In June 2015, Caitlyn Jenner announced her identity to the world, with a cover of Vanity Fair magazine.
“I’m so happy after such a long struggle to be living my true self,” Jenner wrote in a tweet.
At the time, the news made global headlines, with the family coming out in support, ‘#CallMeCaitlyn’ trending online — and a two-season docu-series, I Am Cait.
The former Olympic gold medallist was a constant of early seasons of Keeping Up — as was Caitlin’s transition, and the impacts on the family.
In the years following her transition, there were reports of tension within the family. In a 2018 interview with Piers Morgan, she stated the only members of the Kardashian-Jenner family she kept in touch with were her biological children: Kendal and Kylie.
More recently, Jenner has turned her attention to politics, where she’s currently running a campaign for Governor of California.
Kim Kardashian’s 72-day marriage
Keeping Up with the Kardashians has given us a front-row seat to several of the clan’s weddings — the majority, Kim’s.
But thinking back, it may not be her lavish Italian ceremony to Kanye West that immediately comes to mind.
Rather, her engagement to basketballer Kris Humphries marked a huge moment in the family’s career, with a $2 million ring, business deals and a two-part special on US channel, E! that amassed more than 10 million viewers.
However, ‘Kim’s Fairytale Wedding’ would quickly grab media attention for other reasons. After just 72 days, Kim Kardashian filed for divorce.
With the rise — and fall — of ‘Kimye’, it now seems like just a distant memory.
Kendall Jenner’s Pepsi ad
With the exception of maybe Rob Kardashian, Kendall Jenner is one of the quieter members of the family — forging her own career as a model that, for the most part, stayed relatively scandal-free.
That is, until 2017, when she featured in a Pepsi ad.
The commercial showed Jenner stepping away from a photo shoot, walking through a crowd of protesters and handing a can of the drink to a police officer. Peace ensues!
It sparked a torrent of criticism for trivialising social justice movements like Black Lives Matter. Pepsi apologised, and it was taken down.
Jenner tearfully addressed the faux pas on a later episode of the reality series.
“After I saw the reaction and I read what people had to say about it, I most definitely saw what went wrong. I was so stuck, and I really didn’t know what to do, and I completely shut down,” she said.
Where to watch the Keeping Up with the Kardashians finale in Australia
Luckily, the tradition of waiting months for a US series to be available in Australia is long over.
If you’ve got Foxtel, a repeat episode will air at 8:30pm AEST Friday evening.
Alternatively, stream online with Binge at any time.
What will the Kardashian family do next?
Friday’s finale sees the family reflect on where they’ve come in the last 14 years.
“I feel like the luckiest girl in the entire world that I get to work with my family every single day,” said Kim.
“This is who I am. This show made who we are, and I’ll never take that for granted.”
While Keeping Up with the Kardashians is coming to an end, the family shows no sign of stepping away from the spotlight.
A two-part reunion will air on June 17 and 20, while a new series is expected to launch on streaming platform Hulu later this year.
