Why Collin Morikawa opted against a driver that does what he wants and likely goes farther at The Players
Yesterday, Collin Morikawa played an incredible round of golf at The PLAYERS Championship and finished the day at -7, making him the early favorite in the tournament.
During the round, many noticed that Collin had gone back to his old SIM driver that he had a lot of success with.
The two-time major champion is winless since 2021, so it’s notable that he’s once again using his old driver.
When asked about the switch after the round, Morikawa said his new driver was giving him a “two-way miss”.
“Last week was a weird one. Just had a two-way miss. It’s tough. The swing’s feeling good and I put in a lot of work this weekend and Monday through Wednesday to make sure I had that cut.
“I have a Stealth 2 driver that’s actually — it probably goes farther, and it actually does what I want, I just haven’t put it in play yet. It was something that we built earlier this week. Just to know where my misses would be, even though I missed a few left, I just know once I hit it off the face, I know where the misses are going to be. It’s nice to have something trusty.”
“But I just didn’t have time to test my other one enough, especially after kind of having the misses on the last week.”
Morikawa is currently one shot back of the lead and set to tee off for his second round at 12:45 PM ET.

Seemed to work just fine for Scheffler, but that doesn’t fit other commenters agenda.

The carbon fiber face is inconsistent. Consider yourself lucky if the glue doesn’t fail and the carbon doesn’t detach itself from the head.

It’s already March. They’ve had it since the end of 22 to play with it. And neither McIlory nor Morikawa can “just hit it” – so much for Far-giveness or some stupid slogan they’re using for this piece of junk

Interesting you guys make great points. Scottie has had luck though. I wonder where the issue really is?

Nick Faldo reveals ‘temperature in the room’ at Masters Champions Dinner
Anticipation has been mounting for the 2023 Masters all year long, but in recent weeks, there’s also been some excitement surrounding this year’s traditional Masters dinner.
The dinner took place on Tuesday night, and while it was always unlikely, some speculated whether or not there could be some controversy due to the fact that there were six LIV golfers who’ve won a green jacket in attendance.
There were also Fred Couples recent comments, where he called Phil Mickelson a “nutbag” and Sergio Garcia a “clown”. With that in the back of everyone’s mind, there was always an outside shot of some interesting stories coming out of the dinner.
However, according to Sir Nick Faldo, the dinner took place without incident.
I’m sure you’re all wondering about the temperature in the room, it was all calm and cool. Only the tortilla soup was spicy hot! ? https://t.co/Q3nsT1Uwal
— Sir Nick Faldo (@NickFaldo006) April 5, 2023
Faldo’s tweet also received some noteworthy replies, including one from professional golfer Scott Hend.
I’m guessing Freddy didn’t sit next to any of the LIV Guys….. I’d think after his statements the last few weeks he wouldn’t of even had a coffee and chat afterwards…..
— Scott Hend (@hendygolf) April 5, 2023
Speaking to Golfweek, 1979 champ Fuzzy Zoeller also revealed how Phil Mickelson “didn’t speak at all”.
“We’re just 33 past champions in a room, all trying to get along. Nobody said a word about it. Phil sat near the end of the table and kept to himself. He didn’t speak at all.”
Thus far, with LIV golfers placed in non-controversial pairings for the first two rounds and now a “calm and cool” champions dinner, the focus remains on golf.
If the LIV golfers manage to climb up the leaderboard into some late tee times on the weekend, we may get some controversy after all.

‘They used to write nice stuff, but now it’s just chaos’ – Harold Varner III blasts media ahead of the Masters
Harold Varner III has never shied from the reason he jumped from the PGA Tour to LIV, and has now re-iterated that it was for his and his family’s future.
“I think I said this a hundred times. It’s the amount of money. It’s generational. The way I grew up, it’s important to me to take care of my family, and you can do it by just signing on the dotted line. That’s why I’ve always played golf. I don’t think many people come from my background economically. I’ve said that, and I’d do it again.”
The former world number five was talking ahead of his second appearance at the Masters, scene of his best-ever major finish when 23rd at Augusta last year.
Varner won his first pro event at the 2016 Australian PGA Championship, gaining revenge for a play-of loss the previous season.
It was then six years until his next victory, a spectacular win at the 2022 Saudi International, finishing with a birdie-eagle run, the winning move being a mammoth 90-foot eagle putt.
The 32-year-old was also very vocal about the way the media has treated all the players that have joined the Greg Norman-led tour, but admits it might spur him on to an ever better finish this time.
“Yeah, I want to play well. Everyone thinks we suck now, so I want to play great.”
Addressing those he was speaking to, he added: “You all write it and I just read it. I don’t pay attention. I don’t know who wrote it. They have Twitter and social media. They just write. I want to play well. It’s not like Space Jam where they took our talents away, so I’m super excited. I want to play well. That’s why you play.
“It’s always on my Twitter. They used to write nice stuff, but now it’s just chaos. But I work well in chaos, so I’ll be good.”

Tiger Woods reveals when he intends to tee it up on Champions Tour
Last month, Jack Nicklaus hinted that Tiger Woods might be interested in playing on the Champions Tour when his time comes. While that came as a bit of a surprise to some at the time, Tiger confirmed that he intends to do just that.
At his Masters pre-tournament press conference, Woods alluded to his future on the senior circuit.
“I just have to be cognizant of how much I can push it. I can hit a lot of shots but the difficulty for me is going to be the walking going forward. It is what it is. I wish it could be easier.”
“I’ve got three more years, where I get the little buggy and be out there with Fred (Couples). But until then no buggy.”
Tiger has long been adamant that he’d never use a cart on the PGA Tour but apparently the Champions Tour is another story entirely.
The 15-time major champion said that his body is still in pain, but feels like he’s in a better place physically than he was last year.
“Mobility, it’s not where I would like it, but … I’ve said to you guys before, I’m very lucky to have this leg; it’s mine,” he said. “Yes, it had been altered and there’s some hardware in there, but it’s still mine.
“It has been tough and will always be tough. The ability and endurance of what my leg will do going forward will never be the same. I understand that.”
“I think my game is better than it was last year at this particular time, I think my endurance is better. But it aches a little bit more than it did last year just because at that particular time when I came back, I really had not pushed it that often. And I had a little window in which I did push it and was able to come back.”
Last year, Woods started strong but struggled over the weekend. He’ll look to build off of that performance in 2023.
