Dating back to the second century BCE, the Templo de Debod was originally dedicated to Amon of Thebes and was believed by some to be the birthplace of the god Horus. This ancient Egyptian temple was donated to Spain in 1968, to save it from the rising waters of the Aswan High Dam.
The Debod Temple stands in Parque de la Montaña, close to the Royal Palace and Príncipe Pío Station. To stay nearby, here are four self-catering favourites within a 10-minute walk.
PYR Select Jardines de Debod
In the bedrooms, stained glass-style windows add a touch of colour
PYR Select Jardines de Debod is located across the road from Parque de la Montaña, and an easy 6-minute walk from the Debod Temple. Inside the apartment, warm earth tones extend from the polished wooden floors and furniture to rich umber walls and cushions. There are two double bedrooms and two bathrooms – one of them fitted with a washing machine. You’ll also have access to a private terrace that looks onto the park. Step outside and the lively bars along Calle Princesa are only a few minutes away. Sambhad is one of the most popular, thanks to its vast cocktail menu and friendly staff.
Plaza España Skyline
The Deluxe apartment has a huge terrace with a dining table and lounge area
Also six minutes’ walk from the Templo de Debod, the Plaza España Skyline apartments sleep up to five people comfortably. The flats are filled with design furniture and stylish accessories in varying accent colours – from teal in one apartment to leafy green in another. While all of them have modern kitchens and city views, the Superior One-Bedroom or Deluxe Two-Bedroom Apartment both have a private terrace. Guests loved the super soft beds and quiet-yet-central location, as well as the convenience of having a 24-hour front desk.
Apartosuites Jardines de Sabatini
Take in sensational views of the Royal Palace from the building’s roof terrace
Apartosuites Jardines de Sabatini is right next to the Sabatini Gardens, overlooking one side of the Royal Palace. This aparthotel combines self-catering suites with full hotel services, including a daily breakfast buffet and round-the-clock reception. Each suite is decorated with bold colours and prints, and has a handy kitchenette with a small ceramic hob, a microwave and a coffee maker. The Templo de Debod is just under 10 minutes from the Apartosuites on foot. You can also reach the trendy bars of the Malasaña neighbourhood in around the same time. Try Bodega de los Reyes for Spanish wines and tapas, or Cervecería History for indie music and beers on tap.
Casa Arriaza
White walls and light-coloured furnishings make the space feel big and bright
A 7-minute stroll from the temple, Casa Arriaza is a modern apartment with space for up to four guests. It’s decorated in pure white, with pale wood flooring and striking touches of sunshine yellow. The double bedroom has a semi-open bathroom with a rain shower, and there’s a comfortable sofa bed in the lounge. The owners live off-site, but are always on hand to answer questions and provide information about the area. Within five minutes, you’ll find supermarkets and fast-food outlets in Príncipe Pío shopping centre. A few minutes in the other direction brings you to leafy Plaza España square.
