What to see and do around Lord’s

There’s nowhere quite like the ‘home of cricket’. From its iconic weathervane to the Long Room honours boards – not to mention the deviously sloped wicket – there’s just something extra special about Lord’s.

It’ll play host to four ICC Cricket World Cup Group games, and the two finalists will contest the trophy here on 14th July. To help you get the most out of your Lord’s experience, we’ve put together a list of things to do near this cathedral of cricket.

What to do

Abbey Road

The area around Lord’s is full of stately avenues lined with townhouses and dotted with little cafés. Just a couple of minutes from the ground, Abbey Road is one of those streets. For years, it was quiet and unremarkable, but with a Georgian house that had been converted into a music studio. But in 1969, the Beatles released their Abbey Road album with the cover featuring what’s now the world’s most famous zebra crossing and ever since, fans of the Fab Four have come here to recreate this legendary image; in fact, it’s almost a rite of passage for any fan passing through London.

The West End

If you’re suffering from World Cup heartache, there’s no better pick-me-up than a show in the West End. This area is jam-packed with theatres, where you can watch all sorts of feel-good musicals, from family classics like Mamma Mia to cheeky parodies like The Book of Mormon. Be warned, though – the most popular shows are sold out weeks in advance, so you’ll need to book ahead. To get to the West End, hop on the Bakerloo Line from Baker Street and emerge at Piccadilly Circus.

Where to eat

Fego Caffe

Located just off St John’s Wood High Street, relaxed and unfussy café Fego is a local favourite for breakfast and lunch. Take your pick from avocado and poached eggs, warm goat’s cheese salad, fluffy pancakes drizzled with syrup and more. It’s also got a few tables outside – a lovely spot to fuel up before heading to Lord’s for the game.

Lord’s Tavern

Located just a solid leg hook away from the middle at Lord’s, this pub is as handy as it gets. The home of cricket’s on-site pub specialises in classics like burgers and Sunday roasts – and vegetarians are catered for with dishes like the howzat! vegan burger. The top-notch chips also deserve a mention. The Lord’s Tavern is open on non-matchdays, too – but if you’re planning on catching lunch here during a break in play, we’d recommend booking ahead.

Hostel One Notting Hill

If you’re keen to balance the genteel surrounds of Lord’s with something more lively, head down the road to Hostel One Notting Hill. This hostel is keen to get guests socialising, with regular walking tours and bar crawls round London. There’s also an outdoor terrace where you can mingle with other guests over a drink. However, if you prefer a quiet night in before a big day’s cricket, you can do that too – Hostel One offers private rooms alongside its dorms.

Three Falcons

On the face of it, Three Falcons is a classic English inn. But it’s more than just a traditional bar with wooden floors, leather seating and a wide range of beers. It also offers large, comfortable rooms with smart bathrooms and extra-soft towels. The property is also only 800 metres from Lord’s, so you can have breakfast at your own pace before strolling to the game in a few minutes.
