What is Topgolf? It’s a question we at GolfWRX get more often than you’d think. So, we’ve put together this guide to the quintessential golf-entertainment experience.

Originally conceived of as an alternative to driving ranges, Topgolf is an inclusive, high-tech golf game aimed at golfers of all skill levels. There are Topgolf locations in several states across the U.S., and the facilities allow greater accessibility to everyone who wants an easy and informal pathway into the sport.

Here is a rundown of Topgolf, a definitive answer to the question—what is Topgolf?—and information on all the essential points you need to know on the accessible experience.

What is Topgolf?

Topgolf features climate-controlled hitting bays, paired with music and a full bar and kitchen.

The three-story-tall range contains several dozen bays which can be rented by the hour. Players’ shots will be relayed back to their bay screen showing the accuracy and distance of each ball.

Akin to a bowling alley, each bay is your own private driving range with waitstaff that will provide you with food and drink from the brand’s extensive menus. Up to six players can play per bay, depending on which game you choose.

What is Topgolf?: Can any skill level play?

Yes! Whether you’re a scratch golfer or picking up a club for the very first time, Topgolf is an experience EVERYONE can enjoy. No experience is needed, and all age groups can participate.

What games can you play?

Topgolf offers a range of different games and even gives recommendations for the best games for you to enjoy depending on your group’s skill level.

The signature game ‘Topgolf’ (aptly named), consists of players scoring points by hitting balls (assigned using the brand’s microchip technology) into any target. The more accurate your shot and the farther the distance, the more points you earn.

There are another three games for beginners, four intermediate games, and three more advanced options.

What sort of food and drink options are available?

While you play, players can take advantage of the loaded food and drink options. From burgers, wings, nachos, and sandwiches, to injectible donut holes, Topgolf will have you covered. You can also drink as you play, with a full range of beer, wine, and spirits menu available.

Can you bring your own clubs to play?

Absolutely. Club rentals are also available at no extra charge.

How much does a bay cost per hour?

State-dependent. You also need a membership to play, which costs $5. Prices are then per bay, not per person. Prices in Las Vegas, for example, range from $33-$78 per hour. You will need to find your local Topgolf venue for exact costs.

2. It’s a symbiosis.

   TopGolf is an excuse to drink.

   Drinking is an excuse for your play at TopGolf.

   The article reads like advertising; like a press release run without critical review.

   The good is very good, the service is excellent, and it’s fun to play with your friends. It’s not terribly expensive compared to other forms of entertainment, but it is very expensive if you consider it a practice range. Don’t.

   If you’re in a group of non-golfers, don’t bring your own clubs. You’re not impressing anyone and you come off as entirely too serious. Besides, and here’s a big one:

   The ball flight isn’t the same. Not just “range ball” different, but really different. I’d say two clubs shorter, but not consistently so. Each ball has within it an RFID chip, which affects both distance and accuracy.

   So have some nachos and a beer, have fun with your friends. And remember, Hogan found it in the dirt, not at TopGolf!

Multiple major champ says the pros should be made to play Persimmon woods

Not a word heard very often, or at all, but now one ingrained into virtually every golf story in the past 48 hours, and now legendary player Tony Jacklin has joined other professionals in suggesting something other than the proposed Model Local Rule, where compettion organisers could enforce a ruling to ensure the players use a ball that travels shorter than balls currently used by professionals and amateurs alike.

The idea is not new. Indeed, the concept of differing balls used by the two sectors of golfer was debated on here as far back as 2017, but with technology moving apace and with players getting stronger and fitter, the two rules makers have proposed a move to stop the huge hitting players that “threaten golf’s long-term sustainability and undermines the core principle that a broad and balanced set of playing skills” that should “remain the primary determinant of golf.”

Whilst everyday golfers will always try to match their professional counterparts, it is a rare thing to hear any comment that it’s unfair that they can’t hit the distances of Bryson, Rory, Cameron Young et al, particularly as distance does not always equate to accuracy.

Player such as Long Drive World Championship runner-up Bryson DeChambeau called the move ” the most atrocious thing that you could possibly do to the game of golf,” whilst current PGA Champion Justin Thomas (wearing a manufacturer’s cap) said the proposed move was “selfish” and that it ignored the fact that “we [the professional golfers] are athletes now.”

On Wednesday, two-time major winner and twice winning captain of the European Ryder Cup side added his opinion to the debate surrounding length.

The 78-year-old took to Twitter to suggest the way to overcome the bombers is to bring back persimmon woods for the professional elite.

Many replies were in agreement, suggesting the smaller head and sweet spot meant the driver used to be the hardest club in the bag to hit and the reason why classic courses were so difficult.

The last player to win a The Masters using a persimmon wood was Berhard Langer in 1993, with players such as Justin Leonard and David Love keeping one in the bag after the majority had moved on to metal beasts.

Whilst it seems as though viewers like to see reachable par-4s, there is a particular delight in watching the guile required around the classic, shorter tracks such as this week’s Copperhead, host of the Valspar Championship.

Whilst Jacklin seems to concede the days of four-iron or five-iron to par-4s is a thing of the past, the current move is certainly trying to get close to it.

Bubba Watson reveals his very strange pre-Masters Champions dinner routine

The build up to the 2023 Masters has begun.

In three weeks time. the great and the good of the golfing world will converge at Augusta National for the traditional first major of the year. And 2023 has added spice.

The famous 13th hole – Azalea – has been lengthened in an attempt to narrow the drive, and therefore the eagle opportunity, whilst there are even changes to the infamous par-3 course, the traditional pre-event jamboree with players bringing along wives and children to take control of the bag.

There is also the small matter of Augusta National permitting current LIV players into the event, stating that, “Each April, the Masters assembles the world’s leading golfers to compete for the Green Jacket and a place in history.” With the likes of Dustin Johnson and Cam Smith now allowed to play, this is the first time in 2023 that we will see a competition between the true world’s best.

The media will hype it, and the famous Masters dinner will also be the focus of attention, being a collection of defending champions that include players with diametrically opposing views on the PGA and LIV tours.

One of the jumpers to LIV was two-time Masters champion Bubba Watson.

He will be one of a few past champions to turn up at Augusta for the Masters Champions Dinner this year and, whilst the journos will be looking for something more interesting to write, he sees no bother. Furthermore, he’s looking forward to the dinner itself and meeting up with ex-caddy Ted Scott, on the bag for both major wins and now, ironically, helping Scottie Scheffler defend his green jacket.

At the press conference for this week’s LIV Golf Tuscon, Bubba told reporters that:

“I think it’s going to be great. I still talk to guys on the PGA TOUR. I still talk to people that work on staff at the PGA TOUR. It’s been amazing communicating with them.”

Contradicting popular thought, he continued, “I still reach out on their birthdays, reach out at Christmas. We still talk. I still watch and pull for my guys. So I can’t wait to get there because when you’re wearing the green jacket at the dinner, everything goes out the window. You know how blessed you are to be in that room and how thankful you are to be in that room. I’ve already talked to guys, and we can’t wait to hang out because I haven’t seen Ted Scott in a while.

Despite the Champions Dinner menus having golf fans salivating every year, Bubba then admitted a bizarre pre-dinner routine, that involves him eating multiple burritos before the meal.

I’ll give you a secret, normally I eat before, eat a couple burritos before I go to the dinner because I don’t know what they’re going to have. But when I saw his menu, definitely want the dessert and I definitely want a couple sliders. So yeah, I can’t wait. It’ll be fun.”

Bubba definitely marches to the beat of his own drum, but this year he won’t be missing out on Scotties’ delights.

Fred Couples reveals the mammoth offer Will Zalatoris rejected to join LIV Golf

Last year, LIV Golf was attempting to lure all of the world’s biggest stars to their tour. They were successful in landing major champions such as Phil Mickelson, Dustin Johnson, Cameron Smith, Brooks Koepka, and Bryson DeChambeau. They were also able to add a few younger players with great potential such as Joaquin Niemann and Mito Pereira.

However, there were still plenty of players LIV struck out on, including the winner of last year’s FedEx St. Jude, Will Zalatoris.

Zalatoris is one of the game’s most promising players, and already has a runner-up finish at the Masters, PGA Championship and U.S. Open.

According to Fred Couples, who was a speaker at the PGA Tour Champions breakfast prior to the Hoag Classic in Newport Beach, Zalatoris turned down a lot of money to join LIV.

“I don’t know anything about the LIV Tour, except they overpay all of them,” Couples said. He then mentioned that Will Zalatoris was initially offered $35 million to join LIV and then later $130 million, both of which he rejected.

“Money is zero object (for LIV),” Couples said. “I give Will a lot of credit; he wants (to stay with) the PGA Tour.”

Zalatoris and Couples are both represented by the same agent, so it’s fair to assume he might have been aware of what LIV offered the 26-year-old.
