What is 3D imaging and 3D photography?
3D image
A 3D image is created by taking two pictures of the same scene , where the two images are viewed from different angles and distances .
This small difference is enough to trick the brain into thinking you’re looking at an image with depth . But in reality, you are looking at a 2D flat picture.
3D Photography
3D photography comes from taking and placing 2 pictures side by side . This follows a principle called Stereopsis, which means you will see the object in a depth of perspective .
2 photos may not need to be different. You will see the object from a different distance and perspective .
History of 3D photography
3D photography, especially cinematography, is one of the trends of the past decade.
In 1839 , 3D technology was used to stereoscopically, where the viewer’s eye would see two images from each eye. The brain will combine the two to create what is called depth . It was Charles Wheatstone who discovered this theory.
Later, in 1939 , Edwin Eugene Mayer and William Gruber invented the View-Master machine – a device that helped create 3D images and quickly created a fever before being killed by digital cameras.
Then a revolution broke out in the 1950s with the advent of the Stereo Realist camera that allowed 3D photography.
Today, 3D photography is becoming more and more popular with the development of digital cameras, smartphones and editing applications.
With video , 3D technology enhances the viewer’s experience . IMAX theaters projected footage from IMAX cameras to create a 3D effect.
2. How to take 3D photos
Take 3D photos on iPhone
Taking 3D photos on iPhone is a simple task and can be done in 2 ways.
Method 1: Choose portrait mode to remove fonts , then post photos on Facebook and switch to 3D photo posting mode.
Method 2: No need to use Facebook, you use a 3rd party application like Fyuse or Seene. These 2 applications have similar working modes.
You just need to move the camera and the phone will capture all the details from different angles . And you already have the 3D image you want.
Take 3D photos on camera
Rocking method
This is the method where the photographer stands still and moves the camera . The 2 photos you take need to come from one location but from a different perspective.
Where you stand, take the first picture with your right eye closed and the second with your left eye closed so that the background remains the same .
Then, put the two images you just took in the same photo using Photoshop or the Stereo Photo Maker or AutoPano programs for best results.
Method of moving the camera tripod
This method means you have to move the tripod to create 3D images and is often used in studios .
What you need to do is move the tripod left or right between 43 – 58mm , parallel to the subject to be photographed.
Splitter mirror method
This is an idea that has been around for a long time and is very useful for single-lens cameras. However, to apply this shooting method, you need to arrange the materials yourself and take time .
The principle of this method is that the angle of view from the camera will be divided into 2 , the left half and the right half with just one shot .
This means you can capture 2 shots in the same frame with just one shot, saving you time in editing.
