We can’t think of many things worse than opening the fridge and realising our favourite cheese is no longer edible. Except realising later on that we threw it away prematurely.
But according to food website Tasting Table we could all be guilty of this as cheese actually lasts a lot longer than we thought, as long as we store it correctly.

The site explains that stored properly, an unopened packet of hard cheese like parmesan or cheddar can be kept in the fridge for between two and four months or eight months in the freezer.

While gruyere, gouda and other cheese which aren’t entirely hard or soft can be stored in a fridge for two to three weeks after they are opened, or two whole months in the freezer if you don’t open the packaging.
According to the Good Housekeeping Institute, ‘Cheese keeps best when it is wrapped in waxed paper. This strikes the right balance between stopping the cheese from drying out and preventing too much moisture from building up. Cling film tends to trap moisture, which can encourage mould to grow on the surface of the cheese.’
Soft cheese lovers though should still reserve a sense of urgency about their cheese eating as options such as brie, feta and camembert should be eaten within two weeks of being opened.
All is not lost then, hurray!
