The best places to see baby animals this spring

Spring is all about new life. The trees grow new leaves, the flowers are in bloom – most importantly – it’s the best time to see adorably baby animals.

Wimpole Home Farm in Royston, UK

Wimpole Home Farm has made a name for itself as one of the largest rare breed sheep farms in the UK. You can see rare breeds that have a long history, such as the Manx Loaghtan and Whitefaced Woodland, and each spring approximately 600 new lambs are born on the farm. This means that throughout the season there is no shortage of little lambs frolicking in the fields.

A 15-minute drive from the farm, Banyers House offers a full English breakfast so you can fill up before you head to the farm.

Hancock Shaker Village in Hancock, Massachusetts, USA

Established in 1791, Hancock Shaker Village is a former Shaker village in Hancock, Massachusetts. Today, it’s open to the public as a museum and working farm. When spring comes, it’s bursting with new life, as piglets, lambs, calves, chicks and kids are born. During this time, much of the village’s activities revolve around these baby animals with daily events and activities for families.

Berkshire Mountain Lodge is under a 20-minute drive from Hancock Shaker Village and other popular destinations, such as the Berkshire Museum.

Turtle Beach in Tobago

Between March and August each year, nearly 6,000 leatherback turtles nest on the shores of Trinidad and Tobago. One of the best spots to see these special creatures is on the aptly named Turtle Beach (also known as Great Courland Bay). If you’re lucky, you might even get to see the birth of tiny hatchlings and watch as they scramble from the beach to the ocean. If you’re interested in doing more than just watching, there are numerous local conservation agencies that welcome volunteers to help protect the turtles during the hatching season.

Fort Myers in Florida, USA

Off the coast of Fort Myers, Florida, lives one of the world’s largest population of Atlantic bottlenose dolphins. In the spring, newborn calves can be spotted doing what baby dolphins do best: leaping in and out of the waters as their pod swims close by. To get up close with these playful animals, kayak rentals are available. Curious by nature, the calves will often come up to the kayaks to investigate; if this happens, give the dolphins the space they need and don’t try to touch them.

Geitenboerderij Ridammerhoeve in Amstelveen, Netherlands

In the heart of Amsterdamse Bos, a large park on the border of Amsterdam and Amstelveen, is the Geitenboerderij Ridammerhoeve. This organic working farm is home to chickens, pigs, cows, horses and plenty of goats. Throughout the year, visitors can watch the animals romp around the farm and surrounding meadow, but for a real treat plan your visit for the spring. This is when a number of baby goats are born on the farm and visitors are invited help with their feeding by giving them a small bottle of milk or a handful of feed. Before you leave, check out the farm’s cafe where you can try artisanal cheese, ice cream and other homemade dairy products.
