Robert Pattinson’s custom-made Batsuit for The Batman weighed about 60lbs, but the actor explains that he still loved wearing it for one hilarious reason. Marking the first standalone Batman movie in almost ten years, The Batman, which is directed by Matt Reeves, promises to introduce a new, darker take on the beloved DC character. The upcoming film sees the Caped Crusader take on more of a detective role this time around as he descends into the dark underbelly of Gotham City to catch a sadistic killer known as the Riddler (Paul Dano).
Trailers and promotional material for the film have already given fans detailed looks at the new Batmobile and Pattinson’s Batsuit. In keeping with the more grounded approach of the film, both the Batsuit and the Batmobile appear more homemade than in previous Batman incarnations. The suit, in particular, is in some respects almost crude, which highlights the grittier approach to both the character and the world of Gotham City. In addition to Pattinson and Dano, The Batman also stars Zoë Kravitz, Jeffrey Wright, Colin Farrell, and Andy Serkis.
In a new interview on Good Morning America (via The Art of The Batman on Twitter), Pattinson reveals that, although the suit is quite heavy at almost 60lbs, he still really liked wearing it. The actor explains that, due to the suit’s innovative design, he could still move freely in it, hilariously describing his desire to do “roly-polies” right after putting it on. Check out Pattinson’s full comment below:
When I put on the one I had made for me, it’s so incredibly well designed. It’s pretty heavy – it’s probably about 60lbs – but it was so well articulated that you could… I mean, as soon as I put it on [I started] doing, I keep calling them ‘roly-polies.’
Kravitz, who is also present for the interview, thankfully clarifies that Pattinson means cartwheels, before hilariously suggesting that perhaps what he was actually doing was closer to “just rolling around on the floor.” Regardless, Pattinson’s comments suggest that, despite the suit’s immense weight, it didn’t hinder his ability to move. Trailers for The Batman reinforce this assertion, with several scenes being shown off of him fighting a number of enemies, depicting the suit’s wide range of motion.
While highly regarded films, Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight trilogy did feature a Batsuit that appeared to somewhat restrict Christian Bale’s movement. The character even references this in The Dark Knight, requesting that Lucius Fox (Morgan Freeman) build him a suit that he can actually turn his head in. Thankfully, this doesn’t seem to be as much of an issue with Pattinson’s Batsuit, with the actor’s comments reinforcing the idea that, like the rest of the film, this incarnation of the Batsuit is more practical than audiences have seen before. With The Batman set to release on March 4, audiences don’t have long to wait before they can see Pattinson’s Batsuit in action, but unfortunately, it doesn’t seem likely the actor will be showing off his roly-polies in the finished cut.
