Background
Philip Alfred Mickelson was born on June 16, 1970, in San Diego, California, to parents Philip Mickelson, an airline pilot and former naval aviator, and Mary Santos. Raised in Scottsdale, Arizona, Mickelson has Portuguese, Swedish, and Sicilian ancestry. Alfred Santos, his maternal grandfather, was a caddie at Pebble Beach Golf Links and took Mickelson to play golf as a kid. Although right-handed, Mickelson played golf left-handed, watching his right-handed father swing, mirroring his style. On a golf scholarship, he attended Arizona State University in Tempe and became the face of amateur golf in the United States. Soon after, he won three N.C.A.A. individual championships and three Haskins Awards in 1990, 1991, and 1992 as the outstanding collegiate golfer. He became the first left-handed swingman to win the U.S Amateur title.
As soon as he graduated, he quickly turned professional and even bypassed the qualifying process of the tour because of his 1991 win in Tucson, which earned him a two-year exemption. In 1992, he won several PGA Tour tournaments during this period that included the World Series of Golf (1996), Byron Nelson Golf Classic, AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am (1998), the Colonial National Invitation (2000), and the Greater Hartford Open (2001,2002).
Ranked second on the PGA Tour’s list of tournament prize money won, Mickelson earns much more from endorsements than he does from prize money. According to 2011 earning estimates, Mickelson was the second-highest paid athlete in the United States and earned an income of over $62 million, of which $53 million came from endorsements. “Forbes” estimated Mickelson’s annual income to be $51 million in 2015.
Mickelson has endorsed major companies like ExxonMobil, Rolex, and Mizzen+Main. He has been sponsored by KPMG, Titleist, Workday, Barclays, Bearing Point, Amstel Light, and Ford in the past. Mickelson’s playing style has been described as “aggressive” and highly social by many. But his excellent short game draws the most positive reviews. Mickelson married Amy McBride in 1996 they have three children together.
