Northport man to appear on ‘Family Feud’
A Northport man will appear on an episode of “Family Feud” that’s scheduled to air Thursday night.
Brad Joplin, his brother and cousins are all part of the Oates family who filmed the episode in Atlanta last June. Joplin isn’t allowed to talk about the outcome, but said that the filming was a fun, bonding experience for his family.
“It was the best experience ever, it was like a dream,” he said. “Everything happened so fast.”
The long-running game show pits family against family in a competition for cash and prizes.
Joplin, 36, is from Florence, where his family member teammates still live. He’s lived in Northport for eight years and recently started a job for Family Endeavors, where he works to assist homeless veterans find housing. He worked for several years as a case manager for Indian Rivers Mental Health Center.
The family auditioned for the show in Birmingham in 2015, and thought they weren’t selected because they didn’t hear back for almost a year. They were invited to attend a taping of the show in June, but weren’t guaranteed that their episode would air, Joplin said.
Producers filmed one game with Joplin’s cousin as the team captain, but decided to film a second after deciding that he was a better fit for the lead spot.
The best part about the experience, Joplin said, was meeting host Steve Harvey.
“I was so nervous, but once it starts and you start playing the game, you get more comfortable,” he said. “Steve makes it comfortable. The whole time, he was joking around and during the commercials he would answer questions and give advice to the audience. He really made it fun, and had us laughing the whole time. Meeting Steve Harvey in person was amazing.”
Joplin said that the stage and the audience are smaller than they appear on television. He grew up watching the show, which premiered in July 1976. The show paid for the family’s gas money to travel to Atlanta and for lodging, he said, which was a fun experience for everyone.
“Just being around family and having fun was the most important part of it,” he said.
The family includes his brother Damon Oates and cousins Marchia Oates, Jazmine Robinson and Ashley Epps. The episode will air on WABM My68 at 6 p.m. or 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Joplin said.
