Someone recently asked me how I keep our chips from going stale, and it literally stopped me in my tracks. I have never, ever thrown away a bag of chips. There are all kinds of products out on the market to keep your chips from going stale. There are lots of people trying to build a better chip clip. Why doesn’t my family of four have this common problem?
Well, for one thing, we try not to open a bunch of bags at a time. We usually have any chips open for more than 2 or 3 days. Then we open a new one. Yup, that simple. It’s kind of a household rule, but in the scheme of things, it’s an easy one to live with.
The other thing I do is to appeal to our base human nature of taking the path of least resistance. Who wants to dig aaaaaallllll the way to the bottom of a chip bag, when there is a fluffy brand new bag right. next. to. it!?!
One might call it sloth, or one could call it cherry picking, or one could call it optimizing our choices. You decide how charitable you want to be. Either way, I address it head on with a very necessary organizing tool…scissors! When we get down to about 20% of the bag or less, I chop most of the bag off, and leave the rest open on the counter. I’ll probably eat these chips while making dinner, but I’ll just as likely have help from the littles as they cruise through the kitchen. Since I’ve removed most of the work, the bag will be gone in no time, effortlessly, leaving no chips to go stale.
After all, it’s never a full bag that goes stale. It’s always the bits at the bottom that no one wants to dig for, right? Voila, no digging required!
And the best part? No extra bowl to wash.
Who am I kidding? The best part is that I’ll let them open a new bag. 🙂
People always want easy 10-minute organizing tips, but what really works are systems that eliminate the need to organize! Admit it, you don’t really want to know the most efficient way to organize the pantry. You just want the pantry to organize itself! Well, use this tip for chips, crackers, snacks of all kinds, and maybe even breakfast cereal, and you’ll never have to organize your pantry again, and you’ll save money in the bargain because you won’t be throwing out food.
Happy summer. May your chips always be crispy.
