What Is a Kilogram?
The standard unit of measurement defined by the International System of Units (SI) to measure mass is called Kilogram. It is represented by the symbol ‘kg’. It is the metric unit to measure the mass of an object and is the standard unit of mass used across the world. The word ‘kilo’ is derived from a greek word ‘kiló’ which means ‘thousand’ ; and the word ‘gram’ is from a latin word ‘gramma’ which means ‘a small weight’. Kilogram is commonly referred to as ‘kilo’ and represented as ‘kg’. Mass and weight are different quantities of measurement. While mass is measured in ‘kg’, weight is measured in ‘Newton’.
Conversion of Kilogram
Kilogram is the next higher unit to grams. It is used to measure medium to high weighing objects. Kilogram is used to weigh body weight, vegetables, fruits and is denoted by the symbol ‘kg’, where ‘k’ stands for kilo and ‘g’ stands for gram. There are so many objects around us that are of different weights and masses. To measure the mass of any object there are some common units in the metric system of measurement. To know more about metric conversion click here.
Kilogram to Grams
A gram is also a unit of mass defined by the international system of units(SI). It is one thousandth of a kilogram. It is denoted by the symbol ‘g’ and is used to measure light weighted objects like a pen or a chocolate bar. Hence, the relation between kilogram and grams is given as, 1 kilogram (Kg) = 1000 grams (g).
Kilogram to Milligrams
As 1 gram (g) is equal to 1000 milligrams (mg), hence the relation between kilogram and milligrams is given as, 1 kilogram (kg) = 1000000 milligrams (mg).
We can convert kilogram into USCS units: pounds, ounces and tons using the below given relations.
Kilogram to Pounds
The relation between kilogram and pounds is given as, 1 kilogram (kg) = 2.2 pounds (lb).
Kilogram to Ounces
The relation between kilogram and ounces is, 1 kilogram (kg) = 35.274 ounces (oz) as 1 pound is equal to 16 ounces.
Kilogram to Tons
Ton is the heaviest unit to measure mass and is denoted by the symbol ‘t’. It is used to measure high weighing objects like machines, cars, and trucks with heavy loads. The relation between kilogram and tons is given as, 1 kilogram (kg) = 0.0011 ton(t).
Now that we learnt to convert kilograms to grams, milligrams, pounds, ounces and ton, let us try these units into kilograms.

Tips to Remember
- Conversion from a bigger unit to a smaller unit can be done by division and smaller unit to a bigger unit by multiplication.
- When we multiply a mass value by 1000, we move three decimal places to the right. For example, 7.250 kg multiplied by 1000 gives 7250 g.
- When we divide a mass value by 1000, we move three decimal places to the left. For example, 9500 g divided by 1000 gives 9.5 kg.
- If there are two mass values (kg and tons) of different units to compare, then convert both of the mass values to one of the units(say tons) to know the result of the comparison.
- Mass is measured in kilograms and weight is measured in a unit called ‘Newton’.
- If the mass of an object exceeds 999g then we express it as 1 kilogram or 1kg.
- The customary units of mass are ounces, pounds, tons and the metric units of mass are milligrams, grams and kilograms.
Solved Examples on Kilogram
-
Example 1: Convert:
a. 11 tons to kg
b. 13000 g to kg
Solution: We will convert 11 tons and 13000 g to kg in the following way
a. 11 tons to kg
As 1 ton = 1000 kg
(therefore) 11 tons = 11 × 1000 kg = 11000 kg
b. 13000 g to kg
As 1 g = 0.001 kg
(therefore) 13000 g = 13000 × 0.001 kg = 13 kg -
Example 2: Eric bought 5 kg 500 g of flour and 3 kg 250 g of sugar to bake cookies. He used 3 kg 300 g of the flour and 2 kg 100 g of sugar. What quantity of flour and sugar was left behind?
Solution: Total quantity of flour = 5 kg 500 g
Amount of flour used for cake = 3 kg 300 g
The quantity of flour left is, 5 kg 500 g – 3 kg 300 g = 2 kg 200 g
Total quantity of sugar = 3 kg 250 g
Amount of sugar used for cake = 2 kg 100 g
The quantity of sugar left is, 3 kg 250 g – 2 kg 100 g = 1 kg 150 g
(therefore) The amount of flour and sugar left is 2 kg 200 g and 1 kg 150 g respectively. -
Example 3: A vegetable truck was loaded with 150 kg 385 g of vegetables and 200 kg 465 g of fruits. Find the total weight carried by the truck.
Solution: Weight of vegetables in truck = 150 kg 385 g
Weight of fruits in truck = 200 kg 465 g
(therefore) The total weight carried by truck = 150 kg 385 g + 200 kg 465 g = 350 kg 850g -
Example 4: There are two stones in the park. One stone weighs 5 kgs and the other one weighs 5 lbs. Which one of them was heavier?
Solution: To compare the weight of both, they both must be in same units. Let us convert 5 lbs to kgs.
As, 1 pound = 0.4535 kilogram
Hence, 5 pounds = 5 × 0.4535 kg = 2.2675 kgs
(therefore) The stone weighing 5 kgs is heavier than the one weighing 5 lbs. -
Example 5: A bag contains 12 kg rice. Express the mass in grams.
Solution: We know that,
1 kg = 1000 g
So, 12 kg = 12 × 1000 g = 12000 g
(therefore) The mass of 12 kg bag in grams is 12000 g.
Practice Questions on Kilogram
FAQs on Kilogram
How Much is a Kilogram in Pounds?
One kilogram is equal to 2.2 pounds. We can use the similar relation to convert 3 kgs to pounds.
3 kgs = 3 × 2.2 = 6.6 pounds
How Many Grams are There in a Kilogram?
There are 1000 grams in a kilogram. Similarly it possible to find number of grams in 10 kgs too.
10 kgs = 10 × 1000 = 10,000 grams
How Do You Convert Kilogram to Tons?
We can convert kilogram to ton by multiplying the given value by 0.0011. We can convert 6 kgs to tons by multiplying 6 by 0.0011.
6 kgs = 6 × 0.0011 = 0.0066 tons
How Many Ounces are There in a Kilogram?
There are 35.274 ounces in a kilogram. Thus, we can find the ounces in 5 kgs also by multiplying it by 35.274 ounces.
5 kgs = 5 × 35.274 = 176.37 ounces
How Many Kilograms are there in a Ton ?
There are 1000 kilograms in a ton. Similarly we use this relation to find number of kilograms in 2 tons.
2 tons = 2 × 1000 = 2000 tons
How Many Kilogram are There in a Milligram?
There are (dfrac{1}{1000000}) kilogram in a milligram. In order to find kilograms in 4 mgs, we can use the same relation too.
4 mg = 4 × (dfrac{1}{1000000}) = 0.000004
How to Convert Pounds to Kilogram?
We can convert pounds to kilogram by multiplying the given value by 0.4535. Thus, we can convert 9 pounds to kilograms by multiplying it by 0.4535.
