More than 20,000 bots have been created on chat app Kik’s platform in the four months since it launched.
Of those, 110 bots are now included in Kik’s featured list, including bots from the likes of CNN and Victoria’s Secret. Across the 20,000 bots, more than 1.8 billion messages have been exchanged on Kik’s platform since April.
Kik said users interacting with its bots spend 32 per cent more time chatting in Kik than non-bot users, with 60 per cent of bot users aged 13 to 19. Kik CEO and founder Ted Livingston said it was still “early days” for bots, the ecosystem was starting to become a “powerful forum of interaction”.
The bot shop on Kik currently has three categories: entertainment, lifestyle and gaming. Kik said the most successful bots where those who could respond to customised commands and communicate with users in normal conversation threads.
Kik isn’t the only company betting on bots. Security-focussed messaging app Telegram was one of the first services to launch a bot platform back in June 2015 and bigger names have since followed suit.
Facebook and Microsoft have both recently launched bot development platform. In May 2016 Google announced Allo, a messaging app that will incorporate an conversational virtual assistant.
Early bot successes on Kik include Sephora, which provides users with personalised makeup tips; a bot for Vine that pushes popular videos to users; and Zurvival, a zombie invasion game that uses bots to invite new users.
