Kanye West Says ‘Donda 2’ Album Won’t Be Released on Spotify, Apple
Kanye West has revealed that his Donda 2 album will only be available on his own streaming platform, Stem Player.
The rapper—who has legally changed his name to Ye—posted on Instagram on Friday morning to update fans on the release, explaining that the record would not be on Apple Music, Amazon, Spotify or YouTube.
The second part of his Donda project is slated for release on February 22, along with an accompanying “Donda Experience Performance” at the LoanDepot Park in Miami.
“Donda 2 will only be available on my own platform, the Stem Player,” he wrote in the Instagram caption.
“Not on Apple Amazon Spotify or YouTube. Today artists get just 12% of the money the industry makes. It’s time to free music from this oppressive system. It’s time to take control and build our own.”
When the “Gold Digger” rapper released the Donda album last year, he introduced fans to the Donda Stem Player—a device created in collaboration between Yeezy Tech and Kano Computing.
The device, which costs $200, allows users to create loops, raise and lower pitch, and combine stems from different songs.
“Donda 2 will only be streaming on my own platform, the stem player,” West reiterated in a later post.
“You can download new music from stemplayer.com. You can play 4 different elements of the track: vocals, drums, bass and music. It also has a MP3 player available. We currently have 67,000 available and are making 3,000 a day. Go click the link in my bio to purchase.”
The 44-year-old urged fans to become “part of the revolution” by listening to his music on the Stem Player rather than the likes of Spotify or Apple Music.
“I feel that same feeling like when I first moved to New York to make it in Music. I ain’t know what was gonna happen but I knew had to move. After 10 albums after being under 10 contracts,” he wrote.
He added that he “turned down” a “hundred million dollar Apple deal,” adding: “No one can pay me to be disrespected.”
Referring to the Tidal streaming service set up by Jay Z, West added: “We set our own price for our art. Tech companies made music practically free so if you don’t do merch sneakers and tours you don’t eat. Jay Z made Tidal and fake media attacked him. Well in the words of my big brother. Come and get me.
“I’m willing to die standing cause I ain’t living on my knees no more. God please cover me. I run this company 100% I don’t have to ask for permission. This is our 2nd generation stemplayer We have more things we working on.”
West’s Donda 2 posts come after a week of messages about his wish to reconcile with his estranged wife, Kim Kardashian.
