Vomiting is a very common condition that almost everyone experiences from time to time. There are many causes of vomiting, from stomach upset and food poisoning to overeating, strong odors or pregnancy. Despite the discomfort, the condition usually resolves within 24 hours without the need for medical attention. If you, your child, or a loved one is vomiting, there are things you can do to ease the symptoms and put your body at ease. If vomiting does not go away after 24 hours, you should call your doctor right away for further instructions.

Provides water and nutrients to the body
- Cold water will help soothe the stomach more than warm or hot water. You should keep water or fruit juice in the refrigerator to cool before drinking.

- Sometimes sugary drinks like soda can be more palatable to the stomach. You can try drinking some ginger-flavored soft drink if you feel nauseous when drinking plain water.
- Do not chew ice to avoid damaging your teeth and swallowing too much water at once.
- Products like Pedialyte are also great at replenishing nutrients.
- Follow the same rules as when drinking filtered water. Remember to use cold water and drink it slowly to avoid filling your stomach.
- Liquid foods like soups and stews are also good because they hydrate the body.
- Avoid greasy and spicy foods, fast foods, fried foods and sweets. Dairy products also cause more nausea.
- Try to split it into 5 small meals instead of 3 large meals.
- Even if you don’t want to eat, you should try to eat a little to prevent other problems due to lack of nutrition.
Reduce nausea
- Don’t lie on your back if you have trouble sitting up. Instead, you should lie on your side to prevent vomiting.
- You may feel more nauseous while watching television or looking at other screens. Try turning off the TV while resting.
- Do not lie down after eating for at least 2 hours. Lying down can make you more nauseous.
- If the smell of food is a trigger, ask someone else to cook. This condition is very common in early pregnancy.
- Don’t eat foods that have a specific smell like fish.
- Other strong odors such as cigarette smoke and perfume can also trigger vomiting in some people.
- If you must take your medication at the same time of day, call your doctor and ask what you should do.
- If you go for a walk, you should go slowly and avoid swaying back and forth. This movement can make symptoms worse. Also, don’t go too far from home.
- Controlled breathing exercises along with other relaxation techniques such as meditation can also help calm you down.
- Try to avoid activities that increase breathing, such as exercise. Even if you feel better, you should still wait about a day before exercising again.
Use alternative therapies
- Ginger-flavored soft drinks also help you relieve nausea, but they do not contain much natural ginger.
- You can make your own ginger tea, but keep in mind that hot drinks can make you more nauseous. You can add ice to the tea to chill before drinking to soothe the stomach.
- The maximum dosage of ginger supplements is 4 g (about ¾ teaspoon). If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, the maximum dose is 1 g per day.
- Ginger may interact with some prescription anticoagulants. If you are taking anticoagulants, consult your doctor before taking ginger.
- You can also use an acupressure bracelet, also known as a motion sickness bracelet, such as the Sea-band® or ReliefBand®. These products are available at drugstores or online.
- Acupressure bracelets are especially useful on trips if you suffer from motion sickness.
- Clinical trials on aromatherapy have had mixed results, but if you want to give it a try, there’s no harm in it.

- Symptoms of dehydration include: dry mouth, drowsiness, little or dark urine, headache, dry skin, dizziness.
- If you can’t stay hydrated when you drink, keep an eye out for symptoms of dehydration.
- A sharp pain in the chest can signal an impending heart attack.
- Gastrointestinal bleeding or perforation should be treated as soon as possible. Do not hesitate to seek medical attention if you see blood in the vomit.
- Don’t go to bed even if you feel sleepy.
- Other signs of concussion include: headache, confusion, dizziness, slurred speech, ringing in the ears.

- Do not drink a lot of water when the stomach can not handle it. Too much water can make vomiting worse and increase your risk of dehydration. Take small sips and gradually increase the amount of water every 20 minutes.
