Parakeets or macaws are quite interesting ornamental birds. While they are not very difficult to tame, the process takes time, patience, and consistency. Let’s make the process of taming the bird’s nest an exciting journey, it will be a worthwhile experience for both you and your pet parrot!
Steps
Building trust with parrots
- If you just bought a parrot, you need to give it about 2 weeks to acclimate to its new environment. During this time, one of the things they will do is locate their food and water dishes. [2] X Research Source
- During the acquaintance period, if possible, you should keep the parrot in a room with a lot of people. Although this may not sound like much, leaving your parrot in a place with a lot of traffic will actually help it get used to the presence of people and no longer see humans as a threat. [3] X Research Source Note, however, that parrots have very sensitive hearing so you need to make sure the room doesn’t stress them out. In the room there can be many things to observe but do not turn on the speakers too loud or there is draft because too many people pass by. It should be a pleasant environment so that the parrot doesn’t get stressed.
- Keep the parrot’s cage nearby when you’re relaxing, such as when watching TV or reading a book.
- You do not need to interact directly with the parrot when its cage is next to you. Just let the parrot get comfortable in your presence.
- You should not interact with parrots with eye contact. A parrot’s eyes are located on the sides of the head, like most animals that are subject to other predators. The human eye is in the front, so when you look directly at the parrot, it will think you are a predator – you certainly don’t want it to think you are!
- You can cover your hands with a towel if you are afraid of being pecked by a parrot.
- Repeat this action about at least 3-5 times. Each time, bring your hand closer to the parrot. Gradually, the parrot will get comfortable, come closer and peck the food on your hand. [7] X Research Sources[8] X Research Sources
- Hold food in your hand every time you touch the parrot’s cage to change food and water so that the parrot gets used to your hands. [9] X Research Source
- This step may take several days or weeks.
Teach parrot to stand up
- Slowly put out your index finger so that the parrot stands on it. [10] X Research Source
- You can cover your hands with a towel if you are afraid of being pecked by a parrot.
- If your parrot is getting too nervous and scared, you can wait to try again later or try again another day. [11] X Research Source
- If you put your hand too hard, the parrot may get scared and fly away.
- At first, the parrot may not understand this action of yours and fly away. Stay calm and try again until it understands what you want it to do. [12] X Research Source
- Gently say “step up” and gently push the cockatoo’s breast to help the parrot understand that you want it to step on your finger. [13] X Research Source
- If the parrot is still hesitant, you can use some millet to coax it to step up. [14] X Research Source
- Reward your parrot with food to reinforce positive behavior when it lands on your hand.
- Practice getting your parrot to land on your arm a few times a day, with a reward when it does.
- It is possible that the parrot will be very hesitant and do not want to get out of the cage because that is its safe area. You can lure it with food, but don’t push it too hard. [16] X Research Source
- Clearing the way out of the cage (free of toys, food and water dishes) will make it easier for you to get your hands out of the cage. [17] X Research Source
- If the parrot flies away or flies right back to the cage when you take it out, that’s okay too.
- If the parrot flies away, don’t run and chase it. If you chase, the parrot will think you are the predator and it is the prey. Wait for the parrot to land somewhere and calmly approach it, reaching out your hand for the parrot to land on your arm.
- If the parrot flies back to the cage, let it relax a bit and then try again.
- Getting your parrot out of the cage and maintaining it in your arms will take at least a week of regular practice each day, or longer. Be patient and wait for your parrot to get used to being outside the cage.
- No matter which room you take your parrot to, you should cover the mirror and close the windows to avoid distracting the parrot. Also, make sure the room is clean and free of dangers like spinning ceiling fans and other pets. [18] X Research Sources
- In a new environment, the parrot may fly out of your hand. If so, don’t chase it now.
- Rewarding your parrot with food in a new room will also help make it more comfortable in that room.
- Take your parrot to a new room for 15-20 minutes at a time, several times a day. [19] X Research Source
Teach your parrot to walk from hand to hand
- Your parrot may not be familiar with your commands, so try several times to make it understand that you want it to land on your other finger.
- Reward your parrot with a treat each time it steps on your hand.
- Repetition is the key to mastering this lesson.
Advice
- Do not give up! The process of taming swiftlet parrots takes a lot of patience but the results will be well worth it!
- Do not retract your hand when being pecked by a parrot. If you do, it will learn that just pecking you will pull you away. That means the parrot is training you, not you.
- If you decide to keep parrots, you should choose to buy young parrots, ideally baby parrots because they will be easier to train and peck very gently (you won’t get hurt).
- Stay calm and relaxed during parrot training. Although this process can take up to a few months, if you can stay calm, your parrot will be more comfortable.
- Remember to close all windows when taking your parrot out of the cage, or they will most likely fly out the window.
- Although training parrots can be difficult, you will find that they make great companions!
- Young swiftlets will be easier to train. All animals are easier to train at a young age.
- Swallow parrots are quite shy, so if you want to raise a bolder bird, choose an Australian gray parrot. However, raising Australian gray parrots also has more things to keep in mind.
- When you first bring your parrot home, you can wear gloves to avoid pain when the parrot pecks.
- Millet is rich in fat, so in addition to millet, you should reward your parrot with other foods, such as fresh fruit, seeds and bran pellets. However, millet is still the most favorite reward of the bird’s nest. [23] X Research Sources
Warning
- There are some foods that can cause bird’s nest poisoning that you need to avoid, such as jujube seeds, avocados, socpa and onions.
