How to Search a Word on the Web

Today, every web browser has a built-in search engine, allowing us to scan the page for words or phrases. You can also use Google’s advanced search operator to perform a search for a word or phrase in all the pages of a particular domain. Combining these two “weapons”, you will be able to locate a word anywhere on the internet.

Press . Ctrl + F (on Windows) or ⌘ Command + F (on Mac). This will open the “Search” box in almost any browser. This command can also be found in the Edit menu of Internet Explorer or in the ☰ menu of Chrome and Firefox.

If you’re using a web browser on your phone, the search is usually in your browser’s menu and shows up as “Find in Page”.

Enter the keyword you want to find on the page. Your browser will find what matches your keyword. Lowercase or uppercase letters are not important when using a search engine.

Find a website with Google

Go to Google on your browser. You can use Google to perform searches against all pages on a domain. This can help you find word matches on large and complex web pages.

Type . site: domain.com in front of the search term. This operator will tell Google to search only the pages of that domain.

Type the word or phrase you want to search after the website address. You can enter a word or phrases at the same time. Enclose the search term in quotes if you want Google to find an exact word or phrase. ^{[3] X Research Sources}

For example, to find the page with the word “banana” on wikiHow, you would type site:wikihow.vn banana . To find on wikiHow the page with the exact phrase “eat bananas”, type site:wikihow.vn "eat bananas" .

Open a page from the search results and use the Search command. Google will respond to all pages that match your keywords, however, it won’t point you to the exact location of the matching text when you just landed on the page. You need to use the Search tool to get to the location where the keyword appears on the page.
