- There are two ways to reset a Google Mini, depending on which version of the Mini you have.
- If you have a first generation Google Home Mini, you can reset it by holding the dedicated reset button on the bottom of the speaker.
- If you have the newer Google Nest Mini, mute the microphone and then hold down the center of the speaker until it resets.
- If you’ve tried resetting your Mini but it hasn’t worked, there’s a more time-consuming reset method: unplugging your Mini 11 times.
The Google Mini speakers — the first-generation Google Home Mini and second-generation Google Nest Mini — are charming, puck-shaped smart speakers. Their low price means you could likely populate every room in your house with one if you wanted to.
But if you’re having trouble with your Google Mini — maybe it can’t connect to Wi-Fi, or won’t play music — or you’re going to give it away, then you might need to reset the Mini, which returns the speaker to its factory conditions.
Resetting a Google Mini like this will wipe out all your personal and Google account information, as well as any settings you changed, so you can start over from scratch.
There are two versions of the Google Mini, and the way you reset your speaker depends upon which model you have. To identify your Mini, flip it over. If you see a slot for a wall-mounting screw, you have a second-generation Nest Mini. If not, then you have an older Home Mini.
How to reset a Google Home Mini
The reset button is located on the flat part of the bottom of the speaker, near where the power cord attaches. It’s a very small circle.
To reset the speaker:
1. Press and hold the reset button. After about 5 seconds, you’ll hear a warning that “You are about to completely reset Google Home.”
2. Continue holding the button for another 10 seconds until you hear a tone.
You can now release the reset button and wait for the speaker to reset and restart.
How to reset a Google Nest Mini
1. Slide the microphone switch (which you can find on the side of the speaker) to the off position. You’ll hear the Google Assistant announce that the microphone is off, and you’ll see the lights on the top of the speaker pulse orange.
2. Press and hold the very center of the top of the speaker. After a few seconds, you’ll hear a warning that you’re about to “completely reset this device.” Continue holding your finger on the speaker.
3. After 10 seconds, you’ll hear a tone. Release your finger and wait while the speaker resets and restarts.
How to reset your Google Mini if the usual process doesn’t work
If your speaker is misbehaving, it might not respond to the usual reset process. If you can’t get the speaker to reset, Google has included a backup method for resetting the Google Mini.
A word of warning: It’s time-consuming and tedious. But it should work even if the primary method fails.
1. Unplug your Google Mini, wait 10 seconds, and then plug it back in. Wait until all four LED lights on the top of the speaker light up.
2. Repeat the first step ten more times — unplug it, wait, and plug it back in until the lights illuminate. Do this 11 times in quick succession.
3. The last time you plug the Mini back in, it should take a little longer to restart — it’s resetting and when it powers back on, it will be factory reset.
