How to Remove Write Protection from Memory Card

Make sure you are using an administrator account. You will need to access the computer with an administrator account to open the Disk Partition tool needed to remove the anti-write mode of the SD memory card.

Insert the SD memory card into the computer. If your computer has an SD card reader slot, you’ll insert the end with the card’s contacts facing in and the label facing up.

• If your computer doesn’t have an SD card slot, you’ll need to use a USB SD card reader.

Open Start

. Click the Windows icon in the lower left corner of the screen.

Open Command Prompt. Type command prompt , then click

Command Prompt at the top of the Start menu.

Enter the Disk Partition command. Type diskpart into the Command Prompt, then press ↵ Enter .

Click Yes when asked. This will confirm your decision and open a Disk Partition window that looks like another Command Prompt window.

Open the list of your computer’s drives. Type list disk and press ↵ Enter .

Specify the number of the SD memory card. You can find your SD memory card by looking for the number of megabytes or gigabytes that fit your card’s memory in the “Size” column; The number to the right of the word “Disk” displayed in the leftmost column is the number of the SD memory card you are using.

• For example, if you see that Disk 3’s memory capacity is the same as the remaining memory of the SD memory card in use, “3” is the card’s number.
• The top drive (Disk 0) is always the computer’s default hard drive.

Select SD memory card. Type select disk number with “number” replaced by the number of the SD memory card, then press ↵ Enter . This requires the Disk Partition tool to execute the next command for your card.

• For example, if your SD card is “Disk 3” in your computer’s list of drives, you would type select disk 3 at this step.

Remove the “read only” attribute. Type attributes disk clear readonly and press ↵ Enter . You should see “Disk attributes cleared successfully” displayed in the window below the mouse pointer, indicating that your SD memory card has been removed from overwrite mode.

Insert the SD memory card into the Mac computer. You’ll first insert an SD memory card reader into one of your Mac’s USB or USB-C ports, and then insert the card into the reader.

• If you’re using an older Mac, your computer may have an SD card slot on the right side of the body. If so, you would attach the end with the card’s contacts facing inward and the label section facing up.

Find read-only files. In some cases, saving a file as read-only can cause the entire SD card to be locked until the file is switched to “Read and Write” mode. You can check the status of the file by clicking on the file, selecting File , clicking Get Info , and looking at the “Sharing & Permissions” heading.

• If it’s a read-only file, you’ll change the file to “Read and Write” to see if you can remove the overwrite protection set on the card.

Open Spotlight

by clicking on the magnifying glass icon in the upper right corner of the screen. You will see a search bar displayed in the center of the screen.

Open Disk Utility. Type disk utility in the search bar, and then double-click Disk Utility in the search results.

Select your SD memory card by clicking the card’s name in the upper-left corner of the Disk Utility window.

Click the First Aid tab near the top of the Disk Utility window. This will require First Aid to run on your SD card.

• You will follow the on-screen instructions while First Aid is active.
