You will feel discomfort and pain if a piece of popcorn gets stuck between your teeth. Unlike many other foods, popcorn shells are not easily digested in saliva and can survive for a long time between teeth and gums. If not removed, food plaque such as popcorn that remains in hard-to-reach spaces can create a bacterial abscess and lead to the risk of severe gingivitis. When you know how to handle a problem before it becomes complicated, you will be more comfortable and avoid painful infections.
Steps
Use dental floss and other tools
- Try to put the floss as close as possible to the gum of the popcorn-popped tooth. [2] X Research Source
- Bend the floss into a C shape around the tooth and adjacent teeth. [3] X Research Sources
- Bring the thread back and forth and up and down close to the teeth to loosen the popcorn pieces.
- Rinse mouth with water.
- Insert the flat end of the toothpick between the teeth where the popcorn is inserted. [4] X Research Sources
- Gently push the popcorn flakes out between the teeth, moving up or forward. [5] X Research Sources
- If this doesn’t work or the toothpick doesn’t have a flat tip, use the sharp end of the toothpick and gently brush along the gum line. You must be very careful to avoid injuring your gums or poking the inside of your mouth. [6] X Research Sources
- If your teeth are very crooked, you need to find tools made of tough materials that can act as floss.
- Wet the bristles of the brush.
- You can add toothpaste to remove plaque or not, but the foaming action of brushing can help loosen plaque. Squeeze a pea-sized amount of toothpaste onto the brush face.
- Position the brush at a 45-degree angle to the gums. [8] X Research Sources
- Try to move the bristles in different directions to push the popcorn flakes out between the teeth. Once you have removed the popcorn from between your teeth, rinse the bristles of the toothbrush to prevent plaque from sticking.
Get rid of popcorn without flossing
- Mix a tablespoon of salt in a cup containing about 200ml of warm water. [10] X Research Source
- Stir until the salt has dissolved.
- Take a sip of salt water on the side of the tooth that is led. Try to gargle around the area between the teeth where the popcorn is. You can also use a water flosser or a WaterPik oral care product if you have one.
- Chew with a focus on plaque for optimal results.
Treat pain caused by plaque in teeth
- Dab a little clove oil on a cotton ball or tip.
- Use a cotton ball soaked in clove oil to dab the affected area.
- Repeat as needed until you can see the dentist.
- Wrap the ice pack in a face towel. If you don’t have an ice pack, you can wrap a few ice cubes in a towel or dip the towel in cold water.
- Apply a towel to the painful area on your face.
- Use cool packs for no more than 20 minutes at a time. Then leave it out for at least 10 minutes before using it again. [17] X Trusted Source University of Rochester Medical Center Go to source You can do this 3 to 4 times per day.
Advice
- Look in the mirror when flossing and/or using a toothpick to see if there’s any remaining plaque that hasn’t been removed and reduce the risk of self-injury.
Warning
- Do not press or poke the toothpick into the gums. Improper use of toothpicks can cause serious injury. You also must not let children use toothpicks.
