Advice

Copy the IMEI number in case the phone is lost.
If your phone is stolen, you can call or go to the nearest network service center and give the IMEI number for the staff to lock the phone.
If you are living in South Africa, you are required by law to report theft to service providers and the police. Your phone will be blacklisted by ALL carriers so the thief can’t use it for evil. If you do get your phone back, you can remove this command, as long as you can prove ownership.
Prepaid and no-contract phones in the US usually don’t have an IMEI, as do disposable phones in Europe, Asia, and Africa.

Warning

Locking a lost phone with the IMEI number cuts off all communication between the phone and the carrier, so you can’t track the phone. This is the last option if you do not want to expose sensitive information.
Many thieves replace the IMEI number of the phone they stole with the IMEI of another device. If you buy a phone from someone or a place you don’t trust, you should research carefully to see if this IMEI number really belongs to that phone.
