Listening to your heart isn’t always easy, especially in a busy and demanding culture. Although life always tries to push you in front of a million turns, you still have your own sacred paths and places. You can live life to the fullest according to the desires of your heart, which will help you enjoy life, and help people around you more.
Steps
Determine your heart’s desire
- You can also use a technique called Focusing, which is a great technique for getting in touch with the body. [4] X Research Source Here’s how to do the Focus technique:
- Once you’ve cleared the space, ask what’s going on inside of you, paying close attention to what your body responds to. Don’t try to explore it, give yourself space to observe. For example, you may feel a claustrophobic feeling in your chest when you ask about what’s going on inside of you. There should be distance to realize it.
- Begin to understand bodily sensations. It usually comes in the form of a word or short phrase. For example, you can say “suffocating” or “chest pressure” or “pressure”. Try to think of many words until you pinpoint the problem.
- Consider how your body feels and the words that describe it. Check out how they interact with each other. See if your bodily sensations change at all when you correctly identify the emotion’s name.
- Ask yourself what is causing this bodily sensation. What in your life is making you feel stuffy in your chest right now? Don’t be in a hurry to give an answer, let it happen on its own. This may not happen the first time. The Concentration Technique takes practice, but it involves a series of steps to help you open up your heart and everything that’s going on inside of you.
- Meditation. There are many mental and physical health benefits to you from meditation, such as lowering blood pressure and reducing stress. [5] X Research Source Try sitting upright for at least 10 minutes in a quiet place. Focus on one thing, like the feeling of air going in and out of your nostrils, or an object like a pencil. When you stop paying attention to the object, gently remind yourself to bring your attention back. [6] X Research Source
- Long bath. Relaxing in the water has the same effect as other relaxation methods. It’s a great way to relax. You can use this time to reflect on life, or enjoy the silence and feeling of a warm bath. [7] X Research Sources
- Spend some time drinking coffee with a friend. Perhaps you didn’t spend as much time contacting your friends as you would have liked. Use this “your time” to invite a close friend out for lunch or coffee together.
- For example, if you love to read, make sure you make time for reading in your schedule. Ask your friends to recommend you good books. A collection of poems can bring a lot of emotions.
- If you are a movie buff, find some highly rated movies that will be able to touch your heart.
- Spending time in nature is also a good option; it can help you be healthier and understand yourself better. [8] X Research Sources
Organize your life
- Somatic experiencing therapy is similar to the Concentration technique. It focuses on bodily sensations instead of thoughts and memories.
- Cognitive–behavioral therapy can help you check for fixed thoughts and beliefs that may be preventing you from following your heart.
- Find a therapist in your local area. For example, if you live in the United States, you have access to this website.
- For example, you could say, “Hey, I feel like I’m not really living up to my heart right now. I really need someone to talk to about this. Would you be willing to help me?”
- Ask yourself: “Is this what I really want, or am I doing it for someone else and not for myself?”
- Of course, there’s nothing wrong with being generous and working to help others. However, you were able to find a balance when you were true to who you were: being kind and helping others. Otherwise, even with good intentions, you are likely to fail and lose connection with your heart’s calling.
- Avoid confusing natural and difficult resistance with more serious resistance. It’s normal to feel depressed sometimes, even when you’re on the right path. If you’re not sure if you’re doing the right thing, try asking someone you trust, like a close friend or family member.
Act the way you want
- Music. Try joining a choir and taking guitar lessons.
- Art. Go to a painting or sculpture class.
- Dancing. Enroll in a Latin salsa class or even take dance classes at the gym.
- Dramatic. Find out if there are any theater groups around that you can join. Acting is a great way to express creativity.
- Choose a topic and write it at the top of a piece of paper. The topic can be a word like “travel”, or a short statement, like “what do I think about travel”. Set a timer for 5 or 10 minutes and try to write about the topic without thinking much about what you’re doing. Don’t plan ahead. The goal is to let your unconscious mind work instead of letting the central part of your brain take over. [14] X Research Source
- Sit in a comfortable, upright position. Get used to this position for a few minutes. Start paying attention to what is happening in your experience. You will have a lot of wandering thoughts, body sensations, and random emotional spikes. Pay attention to all of this and what else is going on. Do your best to stay “curious” while you don’t have to react to what’s happening. Pretend you are a scientist and you want to observe this experience without interfering with it. Once you’ve practiced sitting in a safe and quiet place, you can try it out in your daily life while you’re doing other things. [16] X Research Source
