One of the joys of caring for cats is that they have a laid-back nature. Cats are better than humans at relaxing and living the life we’ve always dreamed of: playing, eating, and sleeping. However, this habit can get in the way when they are sick. Cats instinctively hide, or their daily routine (sleep) takes place with great frequency. To determine if your cat really has the disease, you need to know the exact signs.
Steps
Watch for Signs of Changes in Behavior and Appearance
- If you don’t notice any other symptoms, you need to monitor your cat for 24 hours (of course, you should take him to the doctor first if you are really worried). In case the fatigue persists into the second day, it’s time to take them to the doctor. [1] X Research Resources BSAVA Veterinary Nursing Textbook Handbook. Cooper & Moulineaux. BSAVA Publications.
- Cats with fever often sleep deeply, skip meals, and their coat is no longer shiny but becomes messy. The nose and ears may be dry and warm to the touch with a finger at normal body temperature. While ear touching is not an accurate way to check temperature, if your cat’s ears are cool, they are unlikely to have a fever.
- Male cats are more prone to urinary problems when they have difficulty urinating. Signs include frequent defecation, and sometimes squatting outside the tray. Cats may squat for a few minutes or squat and move to another place and continue to squat. If possible, you should check to see if they urinate (dry or wet pads?) and if so, continue to check for blood stains. [5] X Source of Research in Small Animal Internal Medicine. Nelson & Couto. Publisher: Mosby. 5th edition
- If your cat hasn’t eaten for more than 24 hours, you need to take her to the vet to detect a potential problem before complications develop. [6] X Research Sources[7] X Research Sources Consultant Internal Medicine in Cats. August. Saunders Publishing House.
- You can conduct a physical exam. Carefully and gently grasp the skin between the shoulder blades. Pull the skin upward away from their body (still be gentle) and then release. If the skin does not return to its original state immediately, then the cat may be dehydrated and should seek medical attention immediately.
- In the early stages of a disease such as diabetes or hyperthyroidism, cats often appear normal but lose weight. You should seek medical advice in case of persistent weight loss.
- Certain diseases, such as abdominal cancer or heart disease, do not usually affect their weight but lose shape. This means that you can feel the ribs and spine more easily because there is not much fat left over, but the abdomen may be round or bulging. If in doubt, you need to take them to the doctor. [10] X Source of Research in Small Animal Internal Medicine. Nelson & Couto. Publisher: Mosby. 5th edition
- Changes in grooming habits can also be caused by arthritis. Then grooming can be painful if joints and muscles are tight and painful. Again, this is a sign that you cannot ignore and should seek veterinary help.
Observation Symptom
- Most cats have a habit of vomiting, which means they vomit occasionally (once or twice a week) to clear their bodies. You don’t need to worry if your cat is active, agile, behaving normally, and eating well. [14] X Source of Research in Small Animal Internal Medicine. Nelson & Couto. Publisher: Mosby. 5th edition
- Note the cat’s behavior. If your cat is unusually tired and uninterested in daily activities, this could be a sign that they are malnourished or ill.
- At times, purring can be confusing when determining respiratory rate (making it faster), so it’s a good idea to count breaths when your cat is not purring or asleep. The normal respiratory rate in cats is 20-30 beats/min, and lower when they are relaxed.
- You should also check to see if your cat’s pupils are dilated. Certain diseases cause a cat’s eye to dilate and remain in that state. You need to take them to the doctor immediately if you notice dilated pupils.
Specific Disease Check
- You can also spot fleas by brushing your cat’s fur on a piece of white paper. You will see fleas on the teeth of the comb or flea droppings on the paper. Flea droppings are shaped like black commas. If placed on damp cotton wool, they will dissolve into streaks of blood.
- Many products advertise that they can kill fleas and keep them out of the house. You should consult a specific doctor.
- Some effective home remedies include adding food supplements such as: Slippery Elm Bark to lubricate the stomach feathers or pumpkin puree (canned) that adds fiber to the stool, pushing the stool out. object out. These may be added periodically to a treatment such as cooked fish or chicken/liver as a precaution against gastric foreign bodies.
- You need to consult your doctor to make sure a more serious problem is not the cause.
- Overeating can be a sign that your cat needs to see a doctor. Thyroid hormone that stimulates appetite can increase metabolic rate and overdrive organ function. [24] X Sources of the Feline Medical Counseling Study . August. Publisher. Saunders.
- FLUTD is caused by many factors such as decreased water absorption, urinary retention, viral or bacterial infection, or diet. Some dry foods form crystals in the urine that can scratch and irritate the lining of the bladder. If left untreated, they can turn into bladder stones that can cause serious blockages.
Advice
- If the cat becomes irritable, wants to be alone, is less excited, etc., they may be sick.
- Some unusual behavior changes don’t cause problems, especially if food or water changes.
- Watch closely for physical symptoms (such as vomiting or diarrhea) and note how often they occur. You can take a picture of your illness or diarrhea to make it easier for your doctor to diagnose and treat it. Strange sounds can be a warning sign that your cat is sick.
- If in doubt, you should contact your doctor. Waiting and procrastinating can be dangerous.
- When cats hide in enclosed areas when they would normally be in a well-ventilated area, this could be a sign that the cat is in pain.
Warning
- If your cat does not eat or drink for two days, you need to take him to the doctor immediately.
- If your cat is dehydrated and vomiting, you need to take him to the doctor right away, as this can cause life-threatening kidney failure.
- If your cat has completely lost control of her bodily functions, then she needs to see a veterinarian immediately. Otherwise, the cat is at risk of kidney failure and possibly death.
- Humans are also prone to itching from flea bites, usually on the ankles.
- Kittens can become anemic if exposed to fleas.
- The most common flea, the cat flea (Ctenocephalides Felis), can carry Dipylidium caninum larvae. If cats ingest fleas while brushing, they are likely to become infected. Fleas also transmit other infectious agents.
