Find out the results. Although Windows 10 does not allow you to abuse the Administrator account as you used to when using older versions of Windows, you can use the Windows 10 installer and Command Prompt to add a user account. The new user is authorized by the administrator to view the files and folders of the main account.

Create the Windows 10 installation tool. Make sure you have a free USB drive with at least 8GB of space, and do the following: ^[1]

• Plug the USB into the computer.
• Open the Windows 10 download page.
• Click Download top now .
• Double-click the downloaded tool.
• Follow the on-screen instructions, and make sure you have selected USB as the installation location.
• Do not rush to remove the USB after the creation is complete.

Change the computer’s boot order. This is the step required to tell the computer to boot from the USB instead of the hard drive:

• Access your computer’s BIOS.
• Find the “Boot Order” section under the Boot or Advanced tab.
• Select the USB name, then press + (or the “Up” key noted in the instructions on the right or bottom of the screen) until the USB is displayed at the top of the list.
• Save and exit using the keys listed in the instructions on the right or bottom of the screen.

Open Command Prompt. Press ⇧ Shift + F10 on the setting screen. The Command Prompt window immediately displays. ^[2]

Replace Utility Manager with Command Prompt. Utility Manager is a service with an icon displayed on the lock screen. When you replace Utility Manager with Command Prompt, you can execute functions with administrator privileges without logging in: ^[3]

• Type move c:windowssystem32utilman.exe c:windowssystem'''32utilman.exe.bak into the Command Prompt.
• Press Enter
• Type copy c:windowssystem32cmd.exe c:windowssystem32utilman.exe into the Command Prompt.
• Press Enter

Restart the computer. Type wpeutil reboot into the Command Prompt, then press ↵ Enter . At this point, you need to remove the installation media from your computer to make sure Windows boots to the login screen instead of showing the installation. ^[4]

• If Windows boots into the installation before you remove the installation USB, remove the USB and press (or press and hold) the computer power button.

Open Command Prompt. When the lock screen shows up, you’ll click “Utility Manager” which has a circle icon with a right-facing arrow in the middle, shown in the bottom right corner of the screen. The Command Prompt window immediately opens.

• If you do not replace Utility Manager with Command Prompt, clicking this icon will bring up the Utility Manager.

Create a new user. Once the Command Prompt opens, you will do the following: ^[5]

• Enter net user name /add and replace “name” with an optional username.
• Press ↵ Enter .
• Enter net localgroup administrators name /add again and replace “name” with the username you just created.
• Press Enter

Restart the computer again. Click the Power icon (Power)

, then click Restart when asked. Your computer will reboot one last time, then you can log in with the new administrator account.

Sign in with the new username. When Windows finishes restarting, you can use the account you just created to log in:

• Select your new username in the bottom left corner of the screen.
• Click Sign In
• Wait for Windows to finish setting up the new user account.

View the main account’s file. You can view all files and folders from the main user account by doing the following:

  File Explorer. You can also press ⊞ Win + E .

• Pull up the scroll bar and click This PC in the left column.
• Double-click your computer’s hard drive.
• Double-click the Users folder.
• Double-click the main account’s user folder.
• Click Continue when asked, then wait for the user folder to display.
• Browse that user’s files and folders as you wish.
