- Click on the desktop or any open window to redirect away from the suspended application. Click the Apple menu and choose “Force Quit”. Highlight the program that is hanging and click “Force Quit” to close.
- Press ⌘ Command + ⌥ Option + Esc to open the Force Quit menu. Select the suspended program and click “Force Quit”.
- Hold down ⌥ Option , Ctrl and at the same time click the application icon in the Dock. Select “Force Quit” from the menu.
- Press ⌘ Command + Ctrl + ⏏ Eject to force the computer to restart. The ⏏ Eject key is usually located in the upper right corner of the keyboard. Newer MacBooks usually don’t have the ⏏ Eject key.
- If the key combination doesn’t work (or your Mac doesn’t have the ⏏ Eject key, you can hold down the power key for about 5 seconds to force shut down the computer. The power button is in the upper-right corner of the keyboard, or behind the iMac, and other desktops.
Fix the cause
- The fastest way to check available storage is to click the Apple menu and select “About This Mac”. Click on the “Storage” tab to see used and remaining space. If the drive has less than 10 GB available, you need to delete some unnecessary files or programs.
- Click the Apple menu and select “Software Update”. Download and install available updates. This tool will find and install updates for the operating system and applications that have been installed through the Mac App Store.
- Update apps outside the App Store separately. If you installed the program from a source other than the App Store, run the Update tool for each program, or install the latest version from the website.
- Reconnect each device and check if it crashes or not. This process will help you determine which device the problem lies.
- Once you’ve identified the device that’s causing your computer to hang, look online to see if anyone else has had the same problem as you, and if the manufacturer has released any patches.
- To start Safe Boot, you need to restart your Mac and hold down the ⇧ Shift key as soon as the boot sound plays. Safe Boot mode will be loaded. If your Mac restarts on its own while it’s in Safe Boot, you don’t need to worry because your computer is trying to fix a problem with the boot drive.
- If your Mac still crashes while in Safe Boot mode, restart the computer as usual to see if the error has been fixed.
- Restart the computer and hold down ⌘ Command + R during the boot process.
- Select “Recovery HD” from the menu that appears.
- Select the “Disk Utility” option.
- Select the drive for which you want to check for errors and click the “Repair” or “First Aid” tab.
- Click “Repair Disk” to start scanning for errors. If it detects a problem, Disk Utility will try to fix it on its own. This process may take a while to complete.
