Hamsters are very cute, small and mischievous. But to raise a hamster, you will have to be concerned with feeding him properly. This can be quite complicated. You need to provide a varied diet to provide the right nutrients without changing the rat’s diet too often.
Steps
Buy the right foods
- Since hamsters have a hard time adapting to changes in their diet, when you buy food, buy the kind that hamsters get from the pet store. After a few weeks, slowly change to a different food if you want. [1] X Research Source
- If you’re feeding your hamster a seed mix, make sure it’s not just sunflower seeds. Hamsters love sunflower seeds, but these seeds don’t satisfy the rat’s nutritional needs.
- Good vegetables for hamsters to eat include: turnips, carrots, chicory, spinach, parsley, pumpkin, chicory, cauliflower, broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, green beans, asparagus.
- Suitable fruits for hamsters include: raisins, seedless apples, strawberries, pears, plums, and peaches. Fruit seeds can be very poisonous, so keep rats away from them. [3] X Research Sources
- Once a week, you can add protein to your hamster’s diet with bits of hard-boiled eggs. [4] X Research Sources
- Be sure to remove leftovers when they start to spoil from the mouse’s cage. Fresh food should be removed from the cage a few hours after feeding.
- At the pet store, you can buy snacks to hang on the roof of the mouse cage. It will force the mouse to find a way to get the food and can treat it as a game.
- Hamster salt or mineral tablets can also provide nutrients and help them grind their teeth.
- Clean the water bottle at least once a week.
Feed the hamster
- Some experts recommend feeding your hamster nocturnal because hamsters are nocturnal animals, so they will stay awake all the time. However, others claim that they wake up and eat scattered throughout the day. It is not yet clear when is the best time.
- Place the bowl on the opposite side of the hamster’s toilet. You will see the hamster defecating in a corner of the cage. Remember that location and place the rat’s bowl as far away from it as possible.
- Wash dishes with soapy water when cleaning the cage weekly. [7] X Trusted Source The Humane Society of the United States Go to Source
Advice
- Don’t overfeed your hamster –doing so can cause the hamster to become obese or develop diseases such as diabetes.
- Clean the hamster’s cage once a week. This way, mold won’t grow on food stored (and forgotten) by mice in the cage.
- Remember to give your hamster new food and water every day to make sure it stays happy and healthy.
