Getting onto the freeway is one of those intense lessons we all learn in our driving lessons. Because the conditions of the highway (and other drivers) are unpredictable, it is very difficult to apply the same way to any situation. Understanding traffic laws and having good driving reflexes are the keys to being able to safely merge onto the highway. See step 1 for all you need to know to be able to merge onto the highway without crashing.
Steps
Using Correct Technique
- Merging onto the highway at the same speed as other vehicles will ensure that you do not create a dangerous situation when a vehicle is traveling at high speed behind you.
- Look in the mirror and pay attention to other cars while you accelerate. You may have to wait a beat or two before increasing to the required speed if you see traffic coming too fast in the lane you intend to merge.
- Look in the rearview mirror in the car, then the driver’s side mirror.
- Glance to make sure there are no vehicles in the blind spot (just behind you in the lane you’re merging into).
- Check to see if anyone slows down or stops at the ramp/entry in front of you.
Practice Good Habits When Getting On Highways
- If you see a vehicle behind you that appears to be slowing down, the driver may be trying to “let you in”; Get up to speed and get their support. This is similar to seeing other cars exiting the lane to merge onto the highway to make room for you.
- If you see vehicles speeding, let them pass before you merge.
- Sometimes other drivers will wave to let you in.
- Never assume that others will go at the right pace. It all depends on how you react to what happens.
Advice
- Always turn your head to look, don’t just look in the rearview mirror because you won’t see the cars in the blind spot.
- Pay attention and not be distracted by other things.
- Look at highway traffic as soon as possible to help you determine the opening you want to accelerate into.
- It is your responsibility to blend in with the flow of media. Vehicles on the expressway have the right of way. You must adjust the speed yourself and blend in safely!
- Always watch how far the lane merges with the highway. Expressway merge lanes can be of very different lengths even on the same highway.
- Make sure you’re moving fast enough to safely merge into the road.
- You may have to slow down and move to the back of the vehicle next to you. Don’t try to “accelerate” to get ahead of that vehicle. You may not have a way to do it.
- Try to blend in with traffic with the distance between the car in front and the car behind your car as long as one car.
- When you cannot safely merge onto the highway – if you want to stay in the merge lane because it has immediately “become an exit”, get out of it – “do not” stop on the “lane” acceleration/exit”. You can simply turn around on the frontage or local roads and try again later.
- If you are really stressed and there are many other people in the car, ask them to calm down so you can focus.
- Remember to check if you can stay in the lane you just entered. In some large cities, the right lane is a residential lane that is only open during certain hours.
Warning
- Watch for vehicles merging into your lane. Many of the entrances to the highway are also the exits of the road you just entered.
- Don’t forget to turn on the signal. This is the best signal for vehicles in the merge lane to know what you’re about to do next.
- Bear in mind that the people behind you are also trying to blend into the highway. Try to give them space to blend in by moving to another lane if possible.
- Sometimes, there is no merge zone to the highway at the end of the ramp. It will be clearly displayed by signs such as “No room to enter” or “Curve”. In this case you’ll have to slow down or even stop to make sure you’re merging into an empty spot in the adjacent lane.
