If you don’t want to get bitten by bed bugs, check to see if they’re in your home or hotel room. Learn how to spot bed bugs or other signs that they’ve spread in your home. Check places where they usually hide like beds or sofas for bed bugs, their droppings or blood stains. If there are no signs there, look in less common places that may be difficult for you to reach.
Steps
Look for signs of bed bugs

- If gloves are not available, you can wrap your hands in a plastic bag before starting the test.

- The stains may look like a drop of blood or spread and form streaks.

- You may also see pale scales left by bed bug pupae as they grow larger.
Check for areas where bed bugs often hide

- If you have a mattress cover that is designed to prevent bed bugs from entering, check any seams, zippers, or gaps in the mattress cover.

- Check the wall next to the bed. Look for bed bug droppings or blood stains.
Tip: Be sure to check the folds of sofas, cribs and baby cots for bed bugs.

- You may also have to turn the item upside down to check the bottom.

- If the wall has decorative braces attached to the ceiling, you will also need to build a ladder to check for bedbugs overhead.

- Remember to also look behind the curtains. Bed bugs can hide behind curtains, where the base of the curtains sweeps into the baseboards.
Check out less popular areas

- If the table or nightstand has hollow legs, remove and inspect the inside of the table or cabinet legs.

- Bed bugs can move to other rooms through electrical outlets. If you find bed bugs in an electrical outlet, you should also check other rooms in your home or hotel.

Tip: Don’t forget to check your pet’s bed. Bed bugs don’t live on pets, but they can hide in a pet’s cozy nest.

- If underneath the rug is a wooden floor, you should also check the gaps between the slats to see if bed bugs are hiding in them.

- Check for cracks in the wall because bed bugs can also get into very small crevices.

- Look closely at the seams of thick fabrics like jackets and underneath collars.
Advice
- If you’re afraid of bed bugs in your hotel room, ask to check the room before you bring your belongings into the room. If not, you should leave your luggage in the bathroom before checking the room.
- Always check for bed bugs when buying used clothing, linens or furniture before bringing them into the home.
- Bed bugs do not live on humans. If you see a tick on your body, it’s probably a tick.
