How to Crochet Flowers

Have you ever had a boring coat or bag? Let’s make a flower, sew it up, and create a new look. With basic skills, you can make woolen flowers in minutes and add flair to just about anything.

Steps

Choose wool. In this article, microfiber wool will be used, often labeled “number 4” in the US. You can use different yarn sizes, but the flowers may not have the usual shape.

Choose light colored wool if you are new to crochet. This makes it easier to see the stitches in a row and where to fix.

Choose a crochet hook. A size H crochet needle is a good choice for small wool yarns. If you’re already crocheting, you can resize the crochet needle to suit your crochet style.

Start with the pinwheel. This is the first step in all products.

The symbol for this tip in most manuals is “ch”.

Hook one stitch on the bottom line (make loops). This stitch is used in all products because it can start, end the row by tying, secure the edges, or even move the yarn to another location without interrupting the crochet pattern.

“Sl st” is the symbol for “end.”
In this article, the stitch makes the first circle to crochet the flower.

Up three balls. This is considered the first double stitch. It will serve as the background for the petals.

Hook 14 double stitches in the thread loop. You will see the next round begin to form.

“Double nose” is denoted by “dc”.

Use the stitch to join the first row. The first part is done!

The stitch will be on the second row in the loop. It’s the center of the flower!

Up a pint. You are crocheting petals!

Hook a single double stitch to the first pin. You will see this crochet stitch symbol in the manual or on the crochet website as “hdc”.

In the same first pin, crochet a double stitch, and a triple stitch. Petals are starting to form!

The symbols are “Dc” and “tc”, respectively.
You can make as many triples or doubles, depending on the yarn size and the size of the crochet needle. The number three needle may be a bit wide for the smaller wool.

Crochet an extra pin to give the petals a sharp edge (if desired). At this point, if you want the petals to be slimmer and more pointed, add a pin (“ch”) stitch. If you prefer rounder petals, skip this step.

Remember the steps you took. Follow the same steps above for each petal, or your flower will be skewed.

At the side of the pin next, crochet a triple, double, and single double stitch. This step will make the petals round.

Hook the stitch at the bottom of the next leg. Have you seen the shape of the petals yet?

Repeat with each petal. Return to the first step from “crochet stitch” and repeat the steps above to crochet each wing. Start at the base of the next pinwheel after each crochet is complete, working until you have 5 petals.

Hook the nose to the end leg. Finished! It’s the last wing!

If you want to make the flowers smaller, next time choose a smaller needle and thin yarn. It will be a bit difficult to crochet and requires some mastery.

Choke. Use a crochet needle to thread the end of the yarn through a few stitches on the back of the flower and then tie it back.

Start with microfiber for small flowers, large yarn for large flowers.
