How to Create a New Folder in Gmail

This article shows you how to create a “folder” in Gmail. Although Gmail calls folders “labels”, they still function as folders. You can create new labels on Gmail desktop and the Gmail iPhone/iPad app, but Android users can’t create new labels in the Gmail app. You can use the newly created label to categorize emails on any version of Gmail, including Android.

Open Gmail by accessing https://www.gmail.com from your computer’s web browser. You’ll see your Gmail inbox if you’re signed in.

If you’re not signed in, enter your email address when prompted, then click NEXT , enter your password, and click NEXT .

Select an email. Click the box to the left of the email to select it.

You cannot create a label without selecting an email; You can always remove the email from that label later.

Click the Create new option near the bottom of the drop-down list to open the menu.

Name the label. You will give your label any name in the “Please enter a new label name” field in the displayed window.

Place the label within another label. If you’d like your label to be placed within an existing label, check the “Nest label under” box, then click the “Please select a parent…” drop-down box. original label…) and click on the label you want to add the new label to.

Add emails to labels. After creating a label, you can start adding emails to the label in the following way:

Tick the box to the left of the email to select it (select multiple emails if you want to add them to the generated label).

Click a label in the drop-down list to save the email.

View the label’s email. If you want to see the contents of the label, do the following:

Place the mouse pointer over a list of folders (such as Inbox ) in the left menu.
Drag the slider down until you see the label.

Open the Gmail app by tapping the red “M” icon on a white background. You’ll see your Gmail inbox if you’re signed in.

If you’re not signed in to email, choose your account or enter your email address and password as required.

Scroll down to the bottom of the screen and tap Create new near the bottom of the pop-up menu.

Enter the label name. You will enter any name for your label in the displayed field.

Unlike desktop Gmail, you can’t create new labels within existing labels when using the Gmail app.

Tap DONE in the upper-right corner of the menu. This will create a new label and add the selected email to it.

Add emails to labels. To add other emails to the label, do the following:

Touch and hold an email to select it, then tap another email if you want to select more.
Tap ⋯ (on iPhone) or ⋮ (on Android).
Tap Change labels .

See label. To see a list of available labels, tap ☰ in the upper-left corner of the screen, then scroll down to the “Labels” section.

When you tap to open a label, you’ll see any emails saved there.

Advice

Adding labels to Gmail is different from creating folders in Google Inbox.
By default, emails added to a label will still show up in the inbox (and in the label). You can remove email from your inbox using an archive operation; As such, the email will not show up in the inbox and will not be removed from the saved label.
