This article will show you how to correct color in any area of an image in GIMP when using a computer. GIMP is a free, open source and available desktop image editor. You can create many different image layers, then use the Bucket Fill or Paintbrush tools in GIMP to change the color of anything, properties, or places in the image.
Steps
Open photo
- You’ll see an image preview on the right side of the pop-up window when you select it.
- If you are asked about converting photo profiles to GIMP compatible color scales, click Convert for best results.
Create a new class
- This option causes a new “Create a New Layer” window to pop up.
- In some versions of GIMP, you may see “Layer Fill Type” instead of “Fill with”.
- If you see “Layer Type”, you can set this option to “Normal”.
Color correction of an area in an image
Feather edges in the bottom left corner. When you select the Free Select tool, you can enable this feature in the lower left corner of the application window.
- This step allows you to choose a thinner border.
- You can increase the Radius value under the “Feather edges” option to make the border even thinner.
- Make sure that the new, transparent layer is selected to the right, not the original image.
- When you’ve finished drawing the outline, you’ll see a dashed line around the selected part.
- Make sure again that the new, transparent layer is selected on the right, not the original image.
- If default, the layer mode is set to “Normal”.
Color correction with Paintbrush
- Make sure this is a separate layer from the “Cpor Mode” layer that you probably used with the Bucket Fill tool above.
- This tool allows you to manually add new colors to the image.
- You can also adjust the size, angle, hardness and many other properties of the brush stroke in the lower left corner.
- Make sure that the new, transparent layer you created for using the brush is selected in the layer list. Do not choose the original image here.
- You should paint over the transparent “Hue” layer, not the original image.
Export photos
- This is the step that opens the options.
- This step combines all the layers to create a single image layer that displays all the saved color corrections.
- Some image formats like JPEG may ask you to select the image quality in the pop-up window. If you see this message, you can optionally adjust the properties here, then click Export to finish.
Advice
- You can point to any icon in the GIMP toolkit and know what it is in the little pop-up window.
