If you ever get in a fender bender car accident, start your iPhone’s voice recorder before you get out of the car. That way, if the guy says it was his fault at the scene but then tries to sue you a month later, you’ll have proof of what actually happened.
Maybe you need to backup or export voice recordings for legal reasons such as above, or maybe you recorded an important interview, or maybe it was a live music event. Whatever the case, iExplorer is the easiest tool to help you access those voice memos on your iPhone and export them to your computer. With iExplorer, you can simply drag and drop voice memos from your iPhone to your Mac or PC computer. Additionally, the voice memos are exported 100% losslessly in their native MPEG-4 (.m4a) file format.
What you will need
- iExplorer
- An iPhone, iPad, or iPod
- USB cable to connect your iPhone, iPad, or iPod
- A Mac or PC with iTunes installed
Before you begin
If you don’t already have iExplorer installed download it by clicking the button below. For more detailed installation instructions, click here.
To transfer voice memos to your computer from your iPhone, iPod or iPad, first open iExplorer on your Mac or PC. Then, go ahead and connect your iPhone, iPad or iPod with its USB cable to your computer. Once the device is connected, iTunes may prompt you to sync your device – click “No” or “Cancel.” We recommend that you avoid syncing the device to iTunes until your certain all your information is already on the computer as, in some cases, doing this may result in the permanent loss of data from your device.
In the Device Overview screen, click on Voice Memos under the Media tab or under Media Library in the left panel.
Exporting
Your voice memos will load in the main window. Select any voice memo or double-click one to preview it. Then, use the Transfer button below the list to export to iTunes or to a local folder. You can hold the Command key (Mac) or Control key (PC) to select multiple items. If you’d like to export all of the voice memos at once, just use the Transfer button and choose the playlist export options.
If you don’t see all of your voice memos listed in Media Library, you should click on Media in the top of the left panel and open the Recordings folder inside the Media folder. That’s where the actual voice memo files are stored. You’ll see a list of .m4a files in that folder, one for each memo. You can double-click any of them for a preview and simply drag/drop them to your computer or right-click and choose Export to Folder from the context menu.
