This is an article on how to change the background of an image using one of the Paint programs on a Windows computer. Although the regular MS Paint program does not allow users to create transparent images, you are still allowed to create a green background by painting a solid color that can be replaced with a custom image. You can also use Paint 3D to cut out the required portion of the image and paste it into the background.
Steps
Using Paint
- You can enlarge the image by clicking the + icon in the lower right corner of the window.
- When you’re done, you’ll have a green background around your subject.
- Click File .
- Select Save as .
- Click JPEG picture .
- Enter a filename, and then click a save folder (such as Desktop ).
- Click Save .
- Since the entire background is the same color, after making the edit to the green background you will have the original subject on the optional background.
Using Paint 3D
. Click the Windows icon in the lower left corner of the screen.

- Try to pull the edges close to the part of the image you want to keep, but not inside.

- Click Don’t save when asked.

- Click Menu with the folder icon in the upper left corner of the window.
- Click Save as .
- Click Image .
- Enter a name for the picture, and then click a save folder (such as Desktop ).
- Click Save .
Advice
- There are many non-Paint services – both free and paid – that allow you to replace the green background of a Paint image with another background of your choice.
Warning
- Avoid using your computer mouse’s scroll button (or scroll function) in Paint, as this can damage the image when you zoom in on it.
