The formula for risk is actually quite simple: novelty + courage = risk. Someone with an adventurous spirit might jump out of a plane, be the first to volunteer to save someone, or even ask someone out on a date. You may not be the adventurous type. If you get motivated and make a new habit of being adventurous, you’ll discover new worlds in a flash.
Steps
Find Motivation
- Wondering why you want to take the risk? What do you think that will give you? Are you ready to accept all opportunities? If you think so, you are correct.
- Conquering the physical challenge also requires you to overcome the mental challenge. For example, if you exercise and climb mountains, this will challenge some of your physical abilities and help you realize how strong your body and mind are.
- Do you think you have something to prove? Are you craving attention? Why are you looking for pleasure? Do you think it will build self-esteem? Do you just want more fun?
- Take a few minutes to answer these questions as it will help you develop a plan for action.
- Fears can include fear of public speaking, snakes, or heights. They can also be fear of talking to strangers, fear of being fired, or failing a class exam. They can stem from a deep fear of being ignorant, abandoned, or feeling insecure.
- Conquering fear leads to building confidence in yourself, your thoughts, and your actions. You will learn how to take care of yourself. For example, you may be too afraid to leave your parents’ house because you think you can’t. If you choose to take the risk and walk away and realize that you can, you have conquered your fear.
- Use visualization. Imagine yourself doing some action that challenges yourself to be adventurous and come out of it alive and well. These situations can be surfing, horse racing, exploring musical possibilities or something smaller like asking for a picture with an athlete. The adventure can be big or small.
- You may avoid taking risks because of your fear of uncertainty. You have to do something from certainty to uncertainty to remove the mental block that prevents you from taking risks. For example, if you avoid or hesitate to participate in some events because you don’t know what will happen, then go on small endurance building excursions gradually. [3] X Research Sources
- If you need a sense of security before you feel comfortable to do something new, practice meditation or yoga to calm down and reduce stress. [5] X Trusted Source Harvard Medical Schop Go to the source When you develop a sense of security and calm, you’ll be ready to take risks. For example, you will travel to Portugal on your own even though you do not know the Portuguese language.
- Motivate yourself towards a sense of freedom. Better yet, say a few affirmations like, “Everything will be fine; I’m ready to start; or this change will be good for me!” Speaking out loud also helps. At that point, simply shouting out loud will be very effective to expend energy and keep you moving forward.
- Use some safety measures. Taking risks doesn’t mean you do unsafe things. Adventures that require physical fitness require a careful assessment of the dangers involved. For example, if you want to learn how to race a boat, you should research the safety requirements. Experts should be consulted. [6] X Research Sources
Create a New Habit
- If you want to take a risk at work, try accessing an online questionnaire to help you realize your interests. [7] X Research Sources
- Talk to someone who’s doing something that interests you. Ask them if they have any tips for you to join.
- You may discover a new hobby that you didn’t even know about. For example, there is a martial arts studio that you drive past every day. One day you decide to venture there. You observe the class and like what you see, and so you sign up for the class.
- Choose a mentor to help you. They could be friends, family members or someone you know at work. Talk to the person and ask, “I’m trying to be more adventurous in my life and this sounds like you’re doing pretty well. Can you give me any advice? Do you mind if I meet you often to talk about this?”
- You can imitate the actions of an expert you do not know. For example, if you admire an oceanographer who has a TV show, you can watch the show and follow them on social media. You can ask them some questions through a few social media channels.
- Planning an adventure with friends can be fun. Discuss and agree that each person is responsible for the task that needs to be completed. For example, a person can check airfare online; others determine what to do while you are at the destination.
- Travel around the world. With proper planning, you will most likely be able to travel around the world in a cost effective manner. Might be cheaper than you think. Research expenses in advance to avoid them getting in the way of you wanting to take the risk. [10] X Research Source
- Set limits and boundaries. [11] X Research Source Taking risks will require doing a lot of things outside of your comfort zone. You can comfortably walk in nature, but you have no interest in skydiving. Know yourself and understand your limits. Don’t be afraid to tell others that you have limits too.
- One way to take action is to change habits. Avoid getting stuck in the rut of doing the same thing the same way. Even doing something as simple as going grocery shopping at a new market will give you a new look. Taking risks can help you get ready for some new possibilities. For example, you go to the new market and meet someone they recommend a job to you, date you, or they know someone you grew up with that you haven’t seen in years. This won’t happen when you don’t take risks.
Explore Your World
- Identify groups on the network and filter for compatibility. For example, if you’re interested in computer graphic software design, perhaps you could find a local film convention and volunteer there. You will meet many people who share an interest in graphic design animation and you will also learn the process of making a film festival.
- Observe the bulletin board at the school or public area. There will be several groups where you can meet and always find new members. Take the chance. Opportunity can change your life.
- Join the event and ask questions. For example, you attend a motorcycle show and ask one of the curators, “This show is amazing. How does everyone get involved in building such a great program?” Most people will talk to you and teach you some interesting things.
- Creating situations for yourself will push you out of your comfort zone. Confusion is the first step to learning something new.
- Read some books about something you don’t know, then state the problem to talk to others about it.
- Talk to someone who’s doing a job you’ve never done. [14] X Research Source
- Observe how people play, work or entertain with friends and family. Notice what they do and see how they are both similar and different from the way you do them. [15] X Trusted Source PubMed Central Go to Source
- Mine your resume and check out some of the skills you have and see how they apply in your new job.
- You may need to take some extra classes to complete a certificate or degree to enter your field of interest. This can take a long time, but the rewards will pay off as long as you see it as a great adventure that makes you happy.
- Make a list of all the things in your life that make you feel bad, scare you, and lack the will to take risks. So, let’s re-enact the situations one by one and deal with them properly. If you miss the ball during the game, join a soccer team and train hard, you will soon be the main hitter. It’s important that you acknowledge the effort even when you’re not a star.
- If you find yourself in a slump, motivate yourself to take on a new adventure. Let the thought of a reward lift your mood.
- Praise yourself for making an effort to be adventurous. Motivate yourself by saying, “You are taking risks because you are aiming for the fullest life. Congratulation”. [16] X Research Source
