Choosing the right gas and fuel mixture will help prolong the life of your car’s engine. If your engine is not running smoothly, you must adjust this mixture and choose the appropriate idling mode to reduce the pressure of the engine, not to let the engine run too fast or too slow. Car carburetor tuning involves just a few very simple steps and doesn’t require cumbersome tools. See Step 1 for more details.
Steps
Adjustment of Gas and Fuel Mixture
- Depending on the make and model of the vehicle and the type of engine, the air filter can be in different locations on the engine. Refer to the owner’s manual or shop instructions for your vehicle type.
- On most carburetor vehicles, the air filter housing will be attached directly to the carburetor.
- Usually these screws will look like flat head screws and you can use a screwdriver to twist them out and then adjust the amount of air and fuel mixture in the carburetor.
- Some carburetors, like the Quadrajet that most GM cars use, have a special screw that you must use a separate tool to adjust. Quadrajet carburetors use a Double D-style head adjuster.
- Other carburetors may have 4-angle adjusting screws.
- The engine lacks gasoline will emit a ping sound when the rpm is high, when the control valve is open, the engine may be flooded with oil. Add the required amount of gasoline to the mixture.
- An engine with excess gas probably won’t change the engine’s sound, but you can smell it. Lower the fuel level. [1] X Research Source
- Adjusting the gas mixture is a rather obscure art, it requires you to understand and listen to the sound of your car’s engine. Tighten both screws slowly and listen to the smooth, even engine sound. When there is any creaking or creaking sound it is a sign of poor air mixture. Keep turning until you find the right spot.
- If you need to adjust the idle speed as well, don’t rush to put the air filter back in place until you’re done. [2] X Research Source
Adjust idle speed
Advice
- If your vehicle is equipped with a tachometer, you can use it as an idling speed regulator (rpm or RPM). Check the manual for the exact rpm per minute.
- If, after adjusting the idling mechanism, the engine still does not run smoothly, return to the gas and fuel adjustment and repeat the steps to adjust both the air mixture and idling.
- Tighten the idling adjustment screw to increase idling speed or loosen the screw to decrease idling speed.
Warning
- You need to remember that when you work with the carburetor, you are working with the fuel source. Use caution when dealing with gasoline.
Things you need
- Flat head screwdriver
- Pliers
- Tissue
