Paul Walker’s personal Nissan Skyline has a fascinating history.
Unlike most of the actors that starred in the original Fast & Furious movie back in 2001, Paul Walker was a passionate gearhead who owned an incredible car collection featuring Ford Mustang muscle cars, BMWs, and several Japanese sports cars. Ironically for a film that focused on street racing and high-speed heists, Michelle Rodriguez and Jordana Brewster didn’t even have drivers’ licenses at the time.
Like his on-screen character Brian O’Conner, Paul Walker also became a huge fan of the Nissan Skyline and JDM cars. As technical advisor Craig Lieberman, who supplied cars for the first two Fast & Furious movies, explains in a new video on his YouTube channel, Walker’s love for the Nissan Skyline and JDM cars started when he first saw an R32 Nissan Skyline at the studio during preparations for the first Fast & Furious movie.
After filming for the movie wrapped up, Walker and Lieberman visited MotoRex, which was the only company that legally imported R34 Skylines into the US. MotoRex loaned Walker a famous R34 Skyline called the Blackbird for an extended test drive. Since the test drive lasted several months, many people mistakenly thought Walker was the owner of the Blackbird, but this was not the case.
After driving the loaner car, Walker bought a 1999 Nissan Skyline V-Spec finished in Sonic Silver instead of the Blackbird. However. after a few months, Walker discovered the car had a few paint issues. In Japan, it was common for Nissan Skylines finished in this color to have mismatched bumpers and taillight surrounds, so Walker replaced it with a white 2001 Nissan Skyline R34 V-Spec II.
The silver Skyline, on the other hand, was converted into a replica of the Blackbird by the car’s new owner in Hawaii, who added a new body kit, wheels, and intercooler, as well as a $3,000 dry carbon hood, breather tank, and upgraded suspension. While it looks very similar to the movie car, Paul Walker’s original Skyline R34 was not used in ‘2 Fast 2 Furious’.
After modifying the car, the Hawaiian owner drove it for a couple of years before it was seized by the DEA when they got in trouble with the feds. Its next owner bought the car when it was sold at auction and kept it in Texas for almost 15 years. It was then acquired by the California-based JDM importer Toprank, where the car resides today. Since this is one of only 14 federally legal MotorRex GTRs in the world and was previously owned by Paul Walker, Lieberman believes the car is worth $400,000. Demand and prices for the Nissan Skyline are also expected to skyrocket when they become legal in the US in 2024.
