Hinata is inspired by the Small Giant playing volleyball on TV. Three years later, Hinata goes to his first ever volleyball tournament and his team is paired against Kitagawa Daiichi, the school of Kageyama Tobio, also known as the King of the Court. Their match against each other leaves them both interested in their skills and sparks a rivalry. However, they meet again the next year, but this time as team mates in their new high school–Karasuno.
Hinata arrives at Karasuno High School, determined to join the volleyball club and defeat Kageyama. He is shocked when he walks into the gym and finds that Kageyama is a potential member of the Karasuno team as well. They fight right away and when captain Daichi Sawamura arrives, he throws the two out and tells them they can’t join the club until they start to get along. Instead of agreeing to work as a team though, they challenge the 3rd years to a match on the condition that if they win, they join the team.
Sugawara starts helping Hinata and Kageyama practice in the morning. After hearing Hinata’s jaded opinions of Kageyama, Sugawara encourages him to work with the first year setter because he could become Hinata’s most formidable ally. As the days pass, Hinata slowly improves, but his relationship with Kageyama isn’t going anywhere until they encounter Tsukishima and Yamaguchi, the other first years applying for the club. Tsukishima’s insults about Hinata’s height and Kageyama’s past motivate the two to team up to win on Saturday.
The practice match that will determine Kageyama and Hinata’s future with the Karasuno High Volleyball Club begins as Kageyama, Hinata, and Tanaka battle Tsukishima, Yamaguchi, and captain Daichi in a 3-on-3 match. Kageyama and Hinata can’t coordinate initially due to Kageyama’s old setting habits and constant harassment from Tsukishima but with encouragement from Sugawara, they manage to figure out a way to utilize their skills to create the perfect attack.
Kageyama and Hinata’s combos start improving, and Hinata’s skills as a decoy begin to emerge. Kageyama, Hinata, and Tanaka are able to rally and win the 3-on-3 first year match, allowing Kageyama and Hinata to be accepted as official team members. As soon as they receive their team jackets, advisor Ittetsu Takeda arrives and announces a practice match with Aoba Johsai. However, there is one condition: Tobio Kageyama must act as the setter for the entire match.
Karasuno arrives at Aoba Johsai, but Hinata’s anxiety doesn’t change. Before the match even begins, Kageyama runs into his old teammate, Kindaichi, who continually calls him king of the court and brings up his past. Karasuno does poorly at first due to Hinata’s mistakes but once the match gets underway, Hinata and Kageyama’s quick attack proves to be an effective weapon. As Karasuno appears to be winning, Kageyama reveals that he doesn’t think Aoba Johsai’s current setter is the official one.
Oikawa suddenly shows up for the practice match. He is revealed to be Aoba Johsai’s captain and official setter. He is also Kageyama’s senpai from middle school. Oikawa enters the game and immediately targets his perfect serves at Tsukishima who can’t receive them properly; this allows Aoba Johsai to catch up to Karasuno. It isn’t until Daichi changes their formation that Karasuno is finally able to win the match against Aoba Johsai. However, Oikawa says that when they next meet, Aoba Johsai will be using all of its aces from the start, and a very different result will be expected. As they leave, Daichi reveals that Karasuno also has a few surprises. Their libero, Yū Nishinoya, is about to return and completely change Karasuno’s dynamics as a team.
While practicing, Kageyama’s shocked when a stranger runs into the gym and perfectly receives his serve. The stranger’s revealed to be Nishinoya, Karasuno’s libero who had been away due to club activities suspension. After introductions, Nishinoya learns that Karasuno’s ace, Asahi, isn’t back and angrily storms out. Seeing how unhappy the upperclassmen are without the ace, Hinata and Kageyama go to him to try to convince him to return. Meanwhile, Takeda continues to pursue Keishin Ukai as the next coach of Karasuno High. Ukai persistently refuses to help, but Takeda comes up with a plan that he believes will pull Ukai into the world of coaching.
Keishin Ukai agrees to Karasuno’s coach after he learns of the upcoming practice match, but only until the practice match is finished. To familiarize himself with the current players’ abilities, he arranges a match for them against the neighborhood volleyball association. Nishinoya and Sugawara are placed on the association team to allow an even match, as only four of the players had been able to make it. Filling in the last spot is Asahi Azumane. Now, Asahi must prove he deserves the title ace and get past the triple block of Kageyama, Tanaka, and Tsukishima to regain his confidence.
As Asahi regains his confidence as the ace, Hinata and Kageyama finally get to use their quick. Ukai’s shocked at the two’s coordination and Kageyama’s skills, which he compares with Sugawara’s dependability and experience, further complicating his decision on which player to pick as the official setter. On the side, Hinata gets distracted as he compares himself with Asahi and how he would never attain that level of strength. However, after a mishap and encouragement from Kageyama, Hinata finally understands his importance to the team as a decoy.
The training camp officially begins and the players ready themselves for the showdown against Nekoma. Surprising backstories of the upperclassmen are revealed and Ukai struggles with his decision on the official setter; in the end, he decides on Kageyama. Nekoma arrives in Miyagi and overwhelms in its practice matches while Hinata unknowingly meets its setter, who looks forward to playing against the first year. The match against Nekoma soon proves to be Karasuno’s toughest one yet.
Nekoma and Karasuno begin their match with Kageyama and Hinata connecting on a quick attack that gives Karasuno the 1-0 lead. Nekoma realizes that they’re up against a genius setter, so they decide to start marking Hinata. Hinata’s blocker gets used to his speed, and starts to block his shots, allowing Nekoma to win the first set 25-22. However, Hinata isn’t discouraged and continues trying. Suddenly, he figures out a way to change his spike path mid-air and realizes that he now has a new weapon to go along with his quick attack.
Nekoma and Karasuno play the second set to an epic 25-23 showdown but in the end, Karasuno falls just short. However, the two schools reform a rivalry that is better than time could imagine. The two come to realize they both have similar personalities on their teams, and they both have players with goals and ambitions. Best of all, they realize they are starting to unite as a team. Despite being thoroughly crushed, Karasuno vows to get revenge on the national stage. In the end, Ukai agrees to become the Karasuno’s full-time coach.
The bracket for the Interhigh is announced. Karasuno has its final practices and works on back-end spikes and signals. Yamaguchi secretly seeks out Shimada’s help with the jump float serve so he won’t be the only first year without an ability to contribute to the team. As the Interhigh approaches, Hinata remembers that around this time last year, Yukigaoka’d lost to Kitagawa Daiichi. Determined, Hinata vows to win at the Interhigh, and eventually beat Kageyama.
The first day of Interhigh finally comes. Karasuno walks into the stadium to rumors about it being “Flightless Crows”, but the players are determined to change their reputation. Daichi catches up with a former teammate before they vow to defeat each other. The match between Karasuno and Tokonami begins and Karasuno easily takes the first three points. Kageyama and Hinata unveil their quick strike and Asahi proves his strength as the ace. The match has just begun, but everyone has realized that Karasuno is back and better than ever.
Karasuno dominates Tokonami and easily wins the first set, but the players don’t falter and continue giving their full efforts. Tokonami begins to lose hope and Ikejiri thinks back to a match from junior high where Daichi gave a speech to the team. He repeats a quote from his friend, motivating his current teammates to give their full efforts as well. Despite that, Karasuno ends up winning easily. Ikejiri is saddened by this, especially since he’s a third year now, but is happy for his friend and tells Daichi to continue winning for Tokonami. Karasuno now heads towards its match against Date Tech, the team that had caused Asahi to quit volleyball.
Date Tech and Karasuno battle it out in the second round, with neither side leading for long. While Date Tech easily blocks Karasuno’s attackers, Karasuno defense holds strong thanks to Daichi and Nishinoya. Kageyama begins to enact the plan Ukai came up with: force Hinata to stand out to take the attention off the other attackers. The two first years use their usual quick strike and throw Date Tech off. When Aone starts keeping up with it, Kageyama switches his focus to Asahi, giving the ace a toss that enables him to push past Date Tech’s defense and finally, get revenge for their previous match. Karasuno has used up its secret weapons now. From this point on, they can only fight to win the match.
Karasuno manages to gain momentum in set 1 and steals the game 25-21. For set two they perform a double rotation to get Hinata away from the Giant #7. While this frees up Hinata for more quick attacks, it also means the matches result will rely heavily on Asahi’s ability to blast through the Iron Wall as he faces #7. When Hinata becomes the vanguard up front, Karasuno is able to slowly increase their lead. However, Hinata rotates to the back with the score 24-22. Should they go to a third game, Karasuno knows they will be at a disadvantage. It all relies on Asahi’s skills to get past the wall. As the match ends and Karasuno is leaving the gym, they look over to see Aoba Johsai is up 24-13 in their 1st round match first set.
Karasuno observes Aoba Johsai’s match and is unnerved by Oikawa’s skill in serves and tosses, especially Kageyama, who has been in Oikawa’s shadow since junior high. The match against the two teams takes place the next day, and Karasuno seems to be more motivated than ever. Right away, Aoba Johsai gets the upper-hand with Oikawa’s setter dump and skillfully executed techniques. However, Kageyama reveals tricks of his own and performs a server dump right back, cutting Aoba Johsai’s lead to 2-1.
Aoba Johsai starts to overwhelm Karasuno and builds a huge point gap. Things get even worse when Oikawa figures out the secret signals Kageyama and Hinata use for their quick strike, and Kageyama begins to panic. This ruins his momentum as he goes too fast with his tosses while Oikawa continues taking point after point. With no timeouts left for this set, Ukai has no choice but to sub Sugawara in.
Sugawara subs in for Kageyama, and Aoba Johsai wins the first set. Kageyama is shocked as he watches Sugawara reveal his real setting abilities. Karasuno takes the lead in the second set thanks to Sugawara’s tactics, but Oikawa’s serves are still a major problem. After observing Sugawara’s interactions with his teammates, Kageyama finally learns what it means to be a setter–and a team member.
After being subbed back in, Kageyama attempts to communicate with each of his teammates and learns how to accommodate the different attackers. He and Tsukishima manage to sync with each other and become an unstoppable force. Oikawa watches this revel and remembers his bitterness and jealousy towards Kageyama from junior high and his goals to defeat Ushijima. He’s not backing down and wants to defeat Karasuno more than ever.
Aoba Johsai begins to pull away in the third set, forcing Coach Ukai to make some drastic decisions. Yamaguchi is subbed in as a pinch server, but the pressure proves to be too much to overcome. A service error occurs, but the error allows Karasuno to calm down and motivates it to fight to its full efforts. Karasuno is finally right at Aoba Johsai’s back.
Kageyama matches Oikawa point for point as the teams become dead even. The long sets take a toll on both teams’ energy and Kageyama starts to notice a change in a former teammate’s attitude towards volleyball. It soon becomes clear to him the difference in his and Oikawa’s abilities but just as he begins to despair, Hinata reminds him that he belongs on Karasuno now. Oikawa acknowledges that Kageyama has realized what teamwork means and is no longer the Solitary King. However, Aoba Johsai blocks Hinata’s quick in the end and wins the match.
After suffering a heartbreaking loss to Aoba Johsai, the third years must decide if they will retire or participate in the spring tournament. Kageyama and Hinata vent their frustration in the gym and determine to keep moving forward. The winner of the fall tournament is revealed, and Karasuno begins its first real practice to get ready for the spring tournament.
After losing in Interhigh, Karasuno High is busy practicing. As Coach Ukai wishes for more practice matches for the team, Ittetsu Takeda barges in with great news: Karasuno has been invited to take part in Nekoma’s training camp! Kageyama and Hinata get lost during a run and ends up meeting with Shiratorizawa Academy’s Ushijima. After Ushijima claims that the only good player from Aoba Johsai High is Oikawa, Hinata challenges him.
Hinata, Kageyama, Nishinoya, and Tanaka are devastated by the possibility of not going to Tokyō if they fail any of their exams. Daichi vows that the entire team will go and thus forces the four to study, though it proves to be much of a challenge. The second years study at Tanaka’s place. Kageyama and Hinata are having a harder time, however, with Tsukishima reluctant to spend much time tutoring them. Luckily, Hitoka Yachi, the possible new manager, proves to be a great help at teaching the duo.
Hitoka feels conflicted about joining the volleyball team. After watching their practice match against Ōginishi High, she starts to see the charm of the team. However, she is having a difficult time expressing her feelings to her mother, afraid that she might disapprove. Luckily, Hinata helps her overcome it by showing to her that even a small role such as a “Townsperson B” can be great.
After Hinata and Kageyama finish their supplementary exam, Saeko Tanaka takes them to join Karasuno team at Tokyo training camp. Now they’re on the team, Karasuno wins their first match on the day; however Eikichi from Shinzen High manages to touch on Hinata’s quicks. Later on, Hinata meets the half Russian player from Nekoma Lev Haiba; Lev promises him that he will be the first one to stop his quick.
Hinata expresses how he wants to improve so that he would be capable of competing by himself, but Kageyama replies that in doing so he would break the team apart. Hinata interprets him as being unsupportive of his wishes, and they argue to the point they ignore each other. The team worry about the situation and hope that the two would reconcile soon.
Kageyama seeks out Oikawa for help regarding Hinata’s wish to hit the quick on his own will. Coach Ukai takes Hinata to see the former coach of Karasuno’s volleyball club to get some advice on how to improve his skills and learn to fight on his own. The two first-years learn that Hinata has the absolute leadership in the attack, so Kageyama has to learn to give Hinata the tosses he wants, and Hinata has to learn more about the techniques to different quicks in order to improve.
Karasuno arrives at Saitama for the training camp. They practice against Fukurōdani, and Hinata realises that Kageyama’s tosses have changed so now the latter will have to work harder in order to hit them. However, the two first-years aren’t the only ones who are trying new moves, and the other schools recognise their efforts in doing so.
Tsukishima begins to think that he shouldn’t put so much effort in training anymore like his brother did, to avoid being disappointed if he fails. Despite practising very hard, Akiteru failed to become a regular player for Karasuno due to the number of more talented players on the team, including Hinata’s idol, the “Small Giant.”
Karasuno is up against Nekoma in a practice match, and Hinata recognises that Kageyama had subconsciously tossed the ball the way he used to when Hinata’s eyes were closed. The middle blocker points this out, so Kageyama decides to practice on his own in order to give Hinata the exact tosses he wants. This causes Hinata to be free to join Tsukishima’s practices with Kuroo, Akaashi and Bokuto. Lev joins in, and their 3-on-3 match gives Hinata the chance to learn new moves he could use against future opponents.
For the last practice match of the training camp, Karasuno is against Fukurōdani again. This time, they have somewhat polished their moves to the point where they are able to gain points and become neck-to-neck in the scores. Takeda likens their mastering of the new skills and executing them to gain points as cogs working together. Their ability to have improved so much in a week and catch up with their team in terms of points causes Bokuto to fall in a dejected mode.
With Bokuto in his dejected mode, Karasuno learns from first-hand experience why Fukurōdani is considered one of the top volleyball teams in Tokyo. Fukurōdani ends up winning the match, with Bokuto scoring the final point. The training camp comes to an end with a barbeque for the players. Karasuno returns back to school to continue practising and honing in their skills, and other volleyball teams of Miyagi are busy practising for the Spring High Tournament.
Karasuno’s first opponents are Ohgiminami High, one of the teams Shiratorizawa had defeated in the Interhigh. Former Coach Ukai comes along to watch Karasuno play, and the general public comment on how much Karasuno has changed from the rumors. Hinata bumps into Yoshiki Towada in the bathroom and vows that Karasuno would beat their team and their future opponents in order to make it into the nationals.
Karasuno’s second opponent is Kakugawa, a volleyball team that has a player who is 201cm tall. Former Coach Ukai comes to watch the match, and Karasuno tries their best to work around the height advantage their opponent has . After their win, Karasuno bumps into Johzenji, who is fated to be their next opponent.
After the match, Karasuno reflects on their performance and seeks areas they could improve on. Tsukishima seeks help from his brother and coach on learning how to block spikers who are taller and stronger than him. Kageyama spies on Aoba Johsai and is astonished by Oikawa’s skills as a setter. Karasuno goes back to Kanto and practise perfecting their new skills, showing their opponents how much they had improved since the last training camp. They arrive back in time for the match against Johzenji.
Johzenji tried a spirited fightback after a stern talk by Hana Misaki, but failed as Terushima’s attempt to copy Karasuno’s Minus Tempo Stop Toss Spike went out of bounds. This would cost them the match, prompting Hana to resign as their manager. Karasuno are now against Wakutani Minami, a team that has a captain with skills similar to the Small Giant, as noted by Coach Ukai. A little over halfway through the first set with Wakutani, both Daichi and Tanaka dive for a ball, and the two end up colliding.
Daichi is injured and has to go to the infirmary, so Ennoshita takes the captain’s spot in the game. Ennoshita reflects on how he had abandoned the volleyball club when he was a first-year, and decides that he would not run away from this match. Yamaguchi is subbed in as an ace server, and he is able to get one float serve past the net.
As Aoba Johsai’s match against Date Tech starts, Karasuno’s match against Wakutani continues. Despite the weakened defense with Daichi’s absence, Ennoshita finds a way for the team to continue scoring. Hinata incorporates the new moves he learnt during the Tokyo training camps, and Karasuno is able to gain victory against Wakutani.
Date Tech is up against Aoba Johsai. Karasuno watches on from the stands, and sees the new setter, Koganegawa, on the courts amongst the remainders of the team they had played against last time. His height makes the match intense, but from his lack of experience as the trademark iron wall, Aoba Johsai is able to gain victory with their ace’s strong spike earning them the winning point.
Aoba Johsai starts the match with Oikawa’s serve, and the team is able to recognise that Karasuno have improved immensely as a team. Despite Hinata and Kageyama’s new quick having been altered slightly, the Seijō third-years are able to think of a tactic to narrow its path to one they can handle more effectively. Karasuno pulls ahead in the first set, but a new player from Seijō is subbed in and completely changes the rhythm of the game.
Karasuno recognises that Kyōtani is a double-edged sword in the match: he makes just as many mistakes as he does attacks, and if Aoba Johsai does not use him successfully, his presence in the game can backfire their intentions to increase their offensive power. Sugawara is subbed into the game to help Karasuno gain more points, but is soon switched back out when the formation changes. Coach Ukai considers bringing Yamaguchi in as a pinch server to win the second set from Aoba Johsai.
Yamaguchi is subbed in as the pinch server and his serves are able to gain Karasuno more points. The gap between the two teams have shrunk, but Oikawa’s strong serves win Aoba Johsai the second set. Now they have to get to the third set to determine the winners.
The two teams are battling to win the third set, and Kyōtani’s efforts are starting to become more reckless. He gets switched out, and has to calm down in order to play again. With the help of Yahaba, he does get back on to continue scoring points against Karasuno, and is finally able to play with Aoba Johsai as a teammate. With Karasuno in the lead, would they be able to win the match to proceed?
It’s the last set and Karasuno is in the lead. Aoba Johsai and Karasuno try their hardest to win, with the thought that the strongest six would be the ones who claim victory. But triumph is with Karasuno, as they win the match with Kageyama and Hinata’s quick spike. Oikawa reflects that it might never be possible for someone with no natural talent to beat any volleyball “genius”, no matter how much they train, strategize or who their teammates are, but that he will never know that unless he continues on the path straight ahead of him with everything he’s got and continues to challenge his own limits.
Karasuno are through to the finals to determine the Miyagi representative for the Spring High Tournament. Aoba Johsai lament on their loss, but vow to beat Karasuno the following year. Oikawa bumps into Ushijima, in which the latter tells him that he had chosen the wrong path, but the former tells him that there is no one team that can guarantee victory. Later on, Ushijima approaches Karasuno at the entrance of the gymnasium, and Hinata and Kageyama vow to beat Shiratorizawa to make it to the nationals.
It’s the start of the game against Shiratorizawa, and Karasuno’s supporters are there to cheer the team on. The starting players of both teams are introduced to the audience and the first match begins with Ushijima scoring a kill off Nishinoya. But the libero is not discouraged, instead is ready to play with his teammates against the left-handed ace.
Karasuno tries their best against Ushijima and his team in the first set, though it is difficult. Facing a left-handed player is rare, and it shows when Nishinoya continues to have trouble receiving Ushijima’s powerful spikes. Unsurprisingly, Shiratorizawa takes the set 25-16 but Karasuno refuses to give up without a fight, with the will to block Ushijima and stopping their opponents from scoring any more points.
Karasuno encounters another powerful opponent: Tendō Satori, also known as the Guess Monster. He is able to easily guess and block their spikes, but with Coach Ukai’s advice, Karasuno is able to catch up easily with Shiratorizawa. Tsukishima is slowly thinking of ways to defeat his opponents, and with Yamaguchi and Sugawara being subbed in to change the momentum of the game, Karasuno is slowly creeping in to take the second set.
Karasuno wins the set, thanks to Tsukishima Kei’s block defense! In this episode we see Shirabu’s past life in Junior High and his reason behind entering Shiratorizawa. See how Karasuno plays against Shiratowizawa in the next set.
With Kageyama resting for a bit, the fifth set will be starting with Sugawara as the setter. As he feels the pressure of entering the last set as a starter, Kiyoko tries to calm him down. On the other side of the court, Tendo reminisces his first year at Shiratorizawa, his moments at the volleyball club, and his childhood memories which helped nurture his current skills in volleyball. As the game carries on, an unfortunate incident happens which leads Karasuno into a pinch.
The intense final set of the match between Karasuno and Shiratorizawa continues. An annoyed Ushijima resolves to crush Karasuno and Hinata as the latter scores yet another point. When Kageyama comes back to the court, he and Hinata score again with their quick attack. Just when they were about to give up as Shiratorizawa regains the lead, an injured-but-determined Tsukishima returns to the court.
Karasuno is complete once again, as Tsukishima finally returns to the court ready with strategies in mind. Now that the team’s defense has become stronger again, they are now able to catch up. With both teams running out of time-outs, it’s now time to determine who will step out of the court as the victors, as well as the losers.
Karasuno, who were once named as the “Fallen Rivals” and “Flightless Crows”, defeats Shiratorizawa with a score of 21-19. Tears of joy and mixed emotions burst through, as Karasuno resolves to win the upcoming Spring High National Tournament.
As Karasuno prepares for the Spring Tournament, the team receives news that Kageyama and Tsukishima are invited to exclusive training camps. Not wanting to lose to anyone, Hinata sneaks into the camp, but must now introduce himself not as a spiker nor decoy, but as a humble ball boy.
Having agreed to be the ball boy for the First Year Training Camp, Hinata quickly finds difficulty in the position as he struggles to keep up with others and is constantly under harsh criticisms. Despite the challenges, Hinata is still determined to find something at the camp that only he can do and to not underestimate what it means to be a ball boy.
While Hinata, Kageyama, and Tsukishima are gone, the Karasuno High School Volleyball Team do practice matches with Tokonami High School. Meanwhile, as the other boys are doing a practice match with the Shiratorizawa third-years, Hinata watches them play and begins to realize that all he’d ever concentrated on is chasing after the ball.
Thanks to Tsukishima, Hinata is able to join in the free practice and quickly impresses several others with his abilities. As he continues to observe and learn new tactics, Hinata soon tries to help a certain player who is continually struggling to keep up with everyone else.
At the All-Japan Youth Camp, Kageyama finds himself targeted by several of the other players.
The last day of training camp has come. Hinata is determined to finish strong with a higher skill level and as many newly acquired techniques as possible. At his own training camp, Kageyama is enjoying playing with many highly skilled players but is showing signs of struggling from his confrontation with Atsumu.
Now reunited, the Karasuno players begin working on strengthening themselves and their skills in preperation for Nationals and Kageyama begins assisting Hinata in trying to improve his jump. As Kageyama continues to struggle with being labeled as a Goody Two-Shoes, Karasuno faces off against Date Tech in a practice match.
The match between Karasuno and Date Tech stretches into an eighth set. With their time limited, Karasuno begins having Hinata blend into attacks in the attempt to overcome Date Tech. Meanwhile, Kinoshita finds himself aiding the team in various ways.
On the first day of the New Year, Daichi is disturbed by a foreboding dream that burdens him as the time to head to the Spring Tournament draws near. The Karasuno team finally departs to Tokyo for the nationals tournament where nerves and excitement begin to arise as the players prepare for their first games and reunite with old friends.
A minor crisis strikes when Hinata’s shoes suddenly go missing before the team’s first game. Kiyoko embarks on the task of retrieving the shoes as she remembers how she first became the manager of the team and the bonds that have been formed. Karasuno faces Tsubakihara Academy in their first game and another crisis takes place when Kageyama seems to be off his game.
With Kageyama back on track, Karasuno begins to power through the rest of the set and show they are not to be underestimated. At the same time, the Tsubakihara team starts doing all they can to ensure that they did not come to the Spring Tournament as mere participants.
Karasuno has won their match and are advancing to the second round of the Spring Tournament. The Fukurōdani team hit a snag in their game when Bokuto falls into a depressed state and Akaashi does what he can to bring the ace back to top form.
Inarizaki begins building pressure on Karasuno with the help of the famous Inarizaki cheering squad using music and timing to throw their opponents off balance. Karasuno begins to feel the affects of Inarizaki’s methods until help arrives in the form of a familiar face.
With the Miya twins successfully copying the freak quick attack, Inarizaki begins to take the lead. As Karasuno struggles to find ways to stop them, Hinata is given an important task with the hope of allowing Karasuno to gain control of the game.
In the second round of the Spring Tournament, Nekoma faces Sarukawa Tech High for the chance to advance to the third round. With Sarukawa and Nekoma both being masters of defense, it becomes apparent that Sarukawa’s real plan is not to quickly rack up points but to instead get Kenma to exhaust himself.
Now in the second set, Kenma continues to be made to run about and further tire himself. As Sarukawa Tech continues to build pressure with their tenacious plays and believing they have manipulated the Nekoma team to play how they want, signs begin to show that Sarukawa Tech may not actually be in control of the game.
In the continuation of the match between Karasuno and Inarizaki, Nishinoya starts to struggle as he is repeatedly targeted by Atsumu’s serves. As Inarizaki continues to widen the gap with their variety of attacks, Karasuno begins to target one of Inarizaki’s players with the hope of turning things around.
Karasuno continues to hold the lead in the score as Suna and Tsukishima begin to form a rivalry. Nishinoya finally admits to the team that he is scared of Atsumu’s serves and Aran’s history with the Miya twins is revealed.
Inarizaki begins to take the set back with unexpected and powerful attacks, with each play continuing to chip away at the spirits of the Karasuno team. When all begins to seem hopeless, a miraculous play made by the last person they expected brings a new wave of hope.
Karasuno has claimed victory and will be advancing to the third round of the Spring Tournament. Emotions are on display from all teams as some are eliminated from the tournament while others prepare for their next battle.
Lev Haiba, a half-Russian student, is the new addition to the Nekoma volleyball team. However, due to his inexperience and free-spirited nature, Kenma and the rest must learn to sync up with their new member.
Karasuno is preparing for the summer training camp in Tokyo, but their main members are at risk of taking catch-up classes for failing their exams. The team now must band together to help said members pass their make-up exams and avoid summer classes.
A recap of the Miyagi Prefecture Spring Interhigh Qualifers in the form of a news program. It goes behind the scenes to follow various participating teams and includes exclusive interviews with notable players.
Nekoma faces off against their friend and rival, Fukurōdani, in the Tokyo Prefecture Spring Interhigh Qualifiers. The two teams are formidable opponents due to their familiarity with each others’ strengths and weaknesses. Along the way, they must resolve issues within their own team in order to grasp victory and advance one step closer to the Spring Interhigh.
