Following the publication of Matthew Perry’s memoir, “Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing,” which is filled with anecdotes about his profession, relationships, and personal life, Elizabeth Hurley, 57, is the most recent A-lister to talk about Perry, 53.
The British actress, who co-starred with Perry in “Serving Sara” in 2002, has only partially read Perry’s book despite having seen the seriousness of his addictions firsthand.
“I haven’t actually read the book yet, but I’ve read [excerpts] of it,” declared Hurley to Yahoo. “It’s quite interesting,” she added. “He’s a very funny writer like he’s a very funny man. He’s an incredibly gifted comedian … his way with words is fantastic.”
“I have very fond memories of him. To be honest, it was a nightmare working with him at that time and, as it’s now known, our movie was shut down because of his addiction,” the actress added.
Hurley was making reference to the temporary shutdown of the film “Serving Sara,” in which Perry plays a process server tasked with delivering divorce papers to Hurley’s character.
“We were in a force majeure and had to all sit at home twiddling our thumbs for some time,” Hurley continued. “It was tough, obviously he was having a tough time, but he was still very charming and a lovely person to work with. But you could see he was suffering for sure.”
Mathew Perry’s past addiction problems
In his memoir, Perry discussed his drug addiction, and he has been open about his sobriety experience.
The Canadian native’s most well-known role, which he played from 1994 until 2004, was Chandler Bing on the NBC sitcom “Friends.”
He filmed “Serving Sara” while he was a cast member of the popular show, at the height of his addiction.
Perry confessed to Diane Sawyer that he consumed Xanax, methadone, and a quart of vodka every day during that time in a shocking tell-all interview that aired late last month.
“It was shot in Dallas and I was doing ‘Friends’ at the same time, so it doubled my workload. And I was flying on a private jet drinking vodka out of a water bottle,” he said.
“I weighed 155 pounds, on my way to 128 pounds. I feel too sorry for that guy, he’s going through too much, and it’s me,” Perry went on. “And I remember that, and I didn’t understand what was going on. But again, I’m sorry, and I’m so grateful to not be that anymore.”
