To celebrate Dr. Jan Pol’s 50th year of working in veterinarian medicine, an anniversary event will be taking place at the Isabella County Fairgrounds.
Dr. Pol generally specializes in treating large farm animals though he also treats cats, dogs, horses, pigs, cows, sheep, alpacas, goats, chickens, and reindeer on occasion.
His interest in animals began at a young age at his family’s dairy farm in the Netherlands. He later graduated from the Utrecht University Veterinary program in 1970 before immigrating to the United States in 1971.
Dr. Pol later moved to Weidman in 1981 where he and his wife Diane founded Pol Veterinary Services out of his garage. Over the years, his practice has gained numerous accolades, including a hit television series, podcasts, products and books.
Currently, his show ‘The Incredible Dr. Pol’ follows Dr. Pol traveling to different farms in central Michigan to care for a variety of pets and animals. The show can be found on Nat Geo WILD and Disney+.
Dr. Pol also has a reality show in the Netherlands called ‘In de Voetsporen van Dr. Pol’ (or ‘In the Footsteps of Dr. Pol’) where a group of Dutch veterinarians compete for the opportunity to join Dr. Pol’s practice. He also has released a memoir called ‘Never Turn Your Back on an Angus Cow—My Life as a Country Vet,’ a line of branded products which includes animal feeds, and a podcast called ‘The Incredible Dr. Polcast.’
On Sept. 11 from noon to 4 p.m., the free anniversary celebration ‘Dr. Polooza’ will be taking place at the Isabella County Fairgrounds.
“We try to give back to the local community as much as we can,” Diane Pol said. “The main purpose of ‘Dr. Polooza’ is to celebrate.”
There will be a special presentation to celebrate Dr. Pol’s many years of helping animals as well as opportunities to meet Dr. Pol. A memorial for 9/11 will also occur at 1:30 p.m. during the event. Also pictures and items collected by Dr. Pol will be set up for viewing at the event.
A variety of local vendors and food trucks will be on the fairgrounds during the event.
“Everyone has been responsive to the idea though we have no idea how many are coming,” Pol said. “We have recommended masks and social distancing.”
