Why go?
Cinque Terre is known for its candy-coloured houses, perched on rugged cliffs overlooking the Ligurian Sea. This UNESCO World Heritage site is made up of five fishing villages, nestled on the coastline of the Italian Riviera. Vernazza has the only natural port in Cinque Terre and is connected to neighbouring villages by a single country road – which is why most visitors choose to arrive by train or via one of the many scenic hiking paths.
The words ‘Italy’ and ‘great food’ go hand in hand for many travellers, so it comes as no surprise that Cinque Terre is known for lip-smackingly good local specialities. These include seafood platters – heaped with freshly caught anchovies, langoustines, mussels and fried calamari – homemade basil pesto, and of course, the region’s famed white wines.
In between feasting on Ligurian delicacies, you can also visit the nearby Church of Santa Margherita d’Antiochia and Doria Castle. Further afield, the Sanctuary of Madonna di Reggio is located a steep, one-hour hike above Vernazza – but the sweeping views and incredible photo opportunities make it worth the trek.
Cinque Terre National Park is best explored on foot, and fortunately, there are routes for all abilities. The most popular trail leads from Vernazza to Monterosso, rising over lush green vineyards and the deep blue sea. In the background, pastel-hued houses stand side by side, glowing in vibrant colours – just like the countless flavours of gelato you can sample once you wander back to town.
When to go?
Vernazza can get very busy in the summer months, so you’re better off avoiding the rush and visiting in April, May, or October. Prices tend to be at their lowest between November and February – but you may want to pack a few extra layers, as temperatures will have also dropped.
