Why go?
With six sensationally beautiful islands to choose from, Hawaii is a nature-lover’s paradise with something for everyone – whether you want to kick back on a white sand beach with a cocktail in hand, or head inland to hike along spectacular volcanic trails. As the only US state to be completely surrounded by water, there’s also ample opportunity to hit the waves for some world-class surfing. Not to mention delicious farm-to-table fare and fresh seafood, especially in the form of poke – a Hawaiian speciality made with marinated raw fish served on a bed of steamed rice.
Spend your days turtle-spotting, exploring rugged canyons, waterfalls, rainforest-cloaked mountains and monumental volcanoes, and traversing lava trails – hiking is a great way to get away from tourist hotspots and enjoy the islands’ beauty all to yourself. Then while away your evenings watching hypnotic sunsets over the Pacific Ocean before a spot of stargazing.
Take a sleeping bag and a tent or hammock and camp on the beach from time to time. And break up a hike by booking a night in a refuge in one of the volcanoes or national parks, such as Haleakalā volcano in Maui; it’s epic to spend a night staring at the stars with the crater walls of a massive volcano high above you, if that’s what you like.
When to go?
Prime time to visit Hawaii is during the shoulder seasons, from April to May and from October to November. These months see balmy temperatures and plenty of sunshine without it being too humid or rainy. Plus, it will be quieter and with lower prices than in high summer.
