Why go?
If the thick walls surrounding Sibiu could speak, they’d have copious stories to tell. The Transylvanian capital was an important medieval trading centre – and its ornate towers and enchanting squares have stood the test of time.
Sibiu is best explored at a leisurely pace, leaving plenty of time to get lost in the labyrinthine streets of the historic upper town. Stroll across the Bridge of Lies or down the Passage of Stairs to the lower town, home to the lively Piata Cibin market.
Here, stalls overflow with fresh produce, which locals use in traditional dishes like shepherd’s cheese polenta, chicken noodle soup or grilled lamb pastrami. Meals in Sibiu are often paired with the region’s famed wines or homemade plum brandy.
With Dumbrava Sibiului Natural Park on its doorstep, Sibiu is a popular starting point for outdoor adventures. Motorcyclists flock to Transylvania every summer to cruise the famous Transfaragasan and Transalpina mountain roads, while Dracula fans can take a day trip to nearby Bran Castle.
When to go?
February and March promise snow-capped summits and low prices. Or, travel in summer when the mountains are calling hikers and cyclists – and perhaps combine your visit with Sibiu Jazz Festival in May or the International Theatre Festival in June.
