Why go?
The port of Saint-Malo is a porthole into Brittany’s seafaring past. The maritime memories are still vivid today, with the citadel enveloping the charming Old Town. Its famous walls now embrace travellers from all corners of the globe, who come to soak up its compelling history and magnificent beaches.
As towering waves lash against the imposing ramparts, take time to explore the labyrinth of the Old Town (or ‘intramuros’ as it’s known locally). Don’t let the time-worn appearance fool you; most of what you see today is a faithful reconstruction, after the area sustained heavy damage in the Second World War. The maze of lanes are home to the Cathedral Saint-Vincent and a 15th-century castle housing the municipal museum. Bars and restaurants serve the Breton classics: local cider and galettes – a buckwheat crepe with savoury fillings such as Comté cheese, ham and egg.
When the tide recedes, it’s time to explore the town’s famously broad beaches and surrounding islands. Exposed causeways make it possible to walk all the way to the tidal islands of Grand Bé and Petit Bé, with the former being the resting place of French politician and romantic writer, Chateaubriand, and the latter home to a well-preserved fort. A visit to nearby Mont Saint-Michel is also highly recommended, with buses departing daily from Saint-Malo.
When to go?
On average, July, August and September are the warmest months, but a visit either side should offer fewer crowds and decent weather. Saint-Malo hosts year-round events, including a literary festival in May, a folklore festival in July and a rock festival in August.
