Why go?
Gdańsk is a showroom for Baltic beauty. Its stunning Polish Gothic architecture is neighboured by Dutch-style houses and wacky modern conceptions such as the jagged-edged European Solidarity Centre. Resurrected from the ruins of World War II, this historic port city harbours cascades of cobblestone streets and canal bridges, whispering with history.
Behind all time-honoured cities lies a magical old town, and Gdańsk is no exception. A stroll down one of its narrow streets promises colourful houses, cute cafés, handicraft stores, and the oldest brick church in the world. It’s also the best place to pick up some of the city’s famous amber, swallowed from surrounding forests by the Baltic Sea, and washed up on the Gdańsk shores by northeasterly winds. Crafted into dazzling jewellery, it makes for a great souvenir. While you’re in the area, you can walk in the footsteps of Polish kings on the Royal Way – the Old Town’s main street and home to architectural gems such as the Neptune Fountain.
Gdańsk is also home to beautiful beaches. Almost the entire coastline is full of sandy shores, dotted with tan-craving tourists during the summer months. The popular beaches of Stogi and Brzeźno are a short tram ride away from the city centre, and both are great spots for watersports enthusiasts and sunbathers alike.
When to go?
For the best of beach life, visit during July and August. The bi-yearly Sounds of the North, traditional Saint Dominic’s Fair and annual Shakespeare Festival are all held around this time. All that aside, if you head over in late April or September, you’ll still have decent weather and less crowds.
