Why go?
Watch the jangadas (old fishing boats) bring their catch in at Mucuripe Beach
Fortaleza is one of Brazil’s most visited cities and for good reason. Think white-sand beaches, fresh seafood and vibrant nightlife in this sunny, seaside capital of Brazil’s Ceará state.
Start your wanderings on Mucuripe Beach, a quiet stretch of sand where old sailboats known as ‘jangadas’ are still used by local fishermen to bring in their daily catch. Arrive early to buy some shrimp at the fish market, and have it fried and dished up in front of you at a local bar.
A typical seafood feast in Fortaleza
Praia do Futuro is every bit as alluring, especially on ‘Crab Thursday’ when locals flock here to feast on this tasty crustacean. This beach is also known for having the best ‘barracas’ (beach bars) in town. Head to Boa Vida for a night of caipirinha cocktails and live forró music – a hip-swinging, dance floor-filling genre that originated right here in Fortaleza.
When to go?
Jericoacoara beach is found on the outskirts of the city
It’s rarely anything but hot and sunny in Fortaleza. Temperatures range from 23 to 31 degrees Celsius through the year, and there is virtually no rain from July to November. A popular time to visit is during one of the annual music festivals – try Fortal, an off-season carnival in July that showcases Brazil’s best musicians, or the long-standing Festival de Jazz e Blues, held in March.
