Why go?

Tokyo is all soaring towers, dizzying crowds and crackling neon; neighbouring Chiba presents a scaled-down alternative.

Shopping is the city’s biggest draw. The Makuhari district’s Aeon Mall has unlimited options, while Mitsui Outlet Park is the go-to for great deals on designer brands. When you’re done, take the suspended Urban Monorail back into town and treat yourself to some ‘Namero’ – a trademark minced fish dish – or top-quality sushi at Choshimaru.

Disneyland is Chiba’s other main attraction. The resort features the same thrilling rides and parks as its American sibling, as well as DisneySea – a unique addition with underwater fantasy worlds like the Atlantis-modelled 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea.

But the fun doesn’t stop there. With transport links reaching all over the Chiba prefecture, you could be watching sunset over Kamogawa’s terraced rice paddies, or catching surf breaks in beach towns like Onjuku within an hour or two.

When to go?

Chiba has a subtropical climate, so it gets very hot and humid in summer. For cooler temperatures, minimal rainfall, and the lowest prices, go between December and January. Or, you could take your chances with the weather and visit in spring to experience the world-famous cherry blossoms.
