Why go?
Astana boasts a space age skyline rarely seen in Europe
Astana’s skyline features some of the world’s most surreal architecture, including the imposing Pyramid of Peace (a 77m-tall structure made entirely of glass) and the Khan Shatyr Entertainment Centre – the largest marquee in the world and home to a beach with sand imported from the Maldives.
The central Bayterek Tower embodies a folk tale about a mythical tree of life
Most conspicuous of all is the vase-like Bayterek Tower, topped by a giant golden globe, meant to represent an egg laid by ‘Samruk’ – a magical bird of happiness, according to local legend. You can take the lift up to a viewing platform found inside the egg, and see downtown Astana in all its shimmering glory.
Astana is also notable for its lively nightlife, with venues like ‘Guns N’ Roses’ and ‘The Chocolate Room’ fuelling the night with rock and dance anthems.
When to go?
Burabay National Park is popular with walkers, climbers and kayakers
Kazakhstan is best visited between June and August. Although the country is very dry, the heat is rarely too hot to handle, with temperatures averaging around 26°C. This is also the best time to go hiking in Burabay National Park, just a few hours’ drive from Astana.
