In Danica Patrick’s final official media appearance before the last race of her career, Sunday’s Indy 500, she was asked one of the most awkward questions that race car drivers can get. But every once in a while, the discussion around having to go to the bathroom during a race comes up.
In April after the Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama, IndyCar driver James Hinchcliffe — who surprisingly did not qualify for this year’s Indy 500 — admitted that he had to relieve himself in the middle of the race.
So Thursday, someone asked Patrick if she’s ever had a similar experience. Here’s how it went, via The Indy Star:
“On a lighter-hearted note, Hinchcliffe, he admitted in Alabama he had to use the bathroom in the car. Has that ever happened to you?” the reporter asked.
“You’ve got to keep it light, right?” Patrick responded. “No, I’ve never peed myself in the car. The only time I ever thought about it was here, my second 500. It was the first yellow flag of the race and it was maybe 20 laps in and I had to pee really bad. I was like, ‘Just do it man.’”
But Patrick said it never happened, which is generally good all around. But things got a little awkward when the reporter kept asking her about going to the bathroom at race tracks. And in true Danica fashion, she threw a jab back.
“Is there a general rule you have before the race?” the reporter followed up. “When you find time to go to the restroom and where you go and all that.”
“Every track’s different,” Patrick responded.
“Is there a general rule for here?” the reporter pressed.
“There’s a couple bathrooms over in the waiting area,” Patrick said, dumbfounded. “Come on buddy, dig deeper.”
While Patrick got lucky this has never happened to her during a race, plenty of other race car drivers aren’t so fortunate.
In addition to Hinchcliffe, NASCAR driver Austin Dillon was overheard on the radio during a race sharing too much information with his teammates, while retired NASCAR driver Dale Earnhardt Jr. said last season, “When ya gotta go ya gotta go.”
The 102nd Indy 500 is Sunday at noon ET on ABC. It will be Patrick’s last race before retiring from the track.
